News WTOP in Washington, DC, along with local stations Urban AC WHUR 96.3 FM, Sports WJFK 106.7 The Fan, Rhythmic WPGC 95.5 FM, Classic Hits WIAD 94.7 The Drive and Hispanic WBQH-AM La Mera Mera 1050 have partnered together for the 2020 Radio Together Campaign.
During these unprecedented times, WTOP wanted to do something that would both bring local stations together and provide its community with the news and information affecting peoples' everyday lives.
WTOP News and Programming Director Julia Ziegler reached out to music stations in the DC region with the opportunity to feature Coronavirus Updates, written and produced by WTOP reporters, on their air. The 60-second feature includes the latest coronavirus news of the day impacting people living in the DMV. The features are sent four times per day to participating stations. The stations are also featured in a co-branded on-air campaign promoting the concept of "Radio Together."
"We are incredibly excited to partner with each of these amazing radio stations in bringing our community together during the coronavirus crisis," said Ziegler. "Now more than ever, the importance of working together and continuing to bring news, information and entertainment to listeners is crucial."
"We are very pleased to be able to work with the great broadcasting owners at Howard University, Entercom and United Media in these challenging times to make this happen," added WTOP General Manager Joel Oxley. "This is what local radio is all about."
"In times like this, it's wonderful for us to come together for the good of our community," said WHUR Program Director Al Payne. "I applaud WTOP for arranging this partnership and our team looks forward to contributing."
