Boston Locked-Down

Authorities continue the manhunt for the white hat suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings earlier this week.  

The suspect’s older brother died in a firefight overnight.  Also dead is an MIT security office, another police officer was critically wounded.

Country KVET-FM, continues to skyrock upward 1.8-2.0-3.1-5.9, the showing is  good for #4 6+.

That vaults KVET-FM into fourth place with its prettiest PPM share ever. KVET-FM and country sibling KASE, Clear Channel’s country share in Austin now at 15.0 share of age 6+ AQH listening.

'Hate Boston' List: Don Geronimo Rips Trio For Website Posting

As a response to the news that Rod, Arnie and Dawn syndicated show had been pulled from active rock KRXQ 98.5 FM Sacramento, Don Geronimo on crosstown Sportradio KHTK 1140 AM read their website statements during his show.

Rob, Arnie, and Dawn have been suspended for their insensitive comments regarding the tragedy at the Boston Marathon, and Thursday released a statement on their website, not apologizing for their actions, but claiming that they’ve done nothing wrong.

Furthermore, they blame Don for getting them in trouble, and Entercom for “bullying” 98 Rock for suspending them.

As Don reads their statement out loud (Click Here for audio), which, he says is full of lies and blames other people for their behavior, and also played clips from the R-A-D show Wednesday, in which they make fun of a spectator who had his legs amputated, rip the Oakland A’s fans who chanted “Lets Go Boston!” at the Coliseum Tuesday night, the Yankees for playing “Sweet Caroline,” and tease their “Top 5 Things We Hate About Boston” list.

Geronimo then went on an epic tear, ripping Rob, Arnie, and Dawn a new one for their hack show, their inexcusable actions, and then lying to everyone in their website statement, and not taking responsibility.

The Rob, Arnie, and Dawn Show is syndicated on KRXQ (98 Rock; 98.5 FM), formerly from Entercom's building in Sacramento, CA and also airs  on KDOT (104.5 FM) in Reno, NV KZND (94.7 FM) Anchorage, AK KBRE (92.5) Merced, CA and KHRD (103.1, 93.3) Redding, CA.

Previous Controversry

On May 28, 2009, Rob and Arnie engaged in a 30-minute conversation in which they described transgender people as "freaks," and "idiots."

Arnie said, "You know, my favorite part about hearing these stories about the kids in high school, who the entire high school caters around, lets the boy wear the dress. I look forward to when they go out into society and society beats them down. And they end up in therapy."

Arnie also said, "If my son, God forbid, if my son put on a pair of high heels, I would probably hit him with one of my shoes."

Subsequently, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and others demanded an apology. Arnie declined to apologize, on the grounds that he was joking and not actually advocating violence against children. He said, "I didn't do anything wrong."

In response to the controversy, Snapple, Sonic, Chipotle Grill, Bank of America, Verizon, Carl’s Jr, Wells Fargo, AT&T and McDonald’s pulled their advertising from KRXQ.

Rob and Arnie have subsequently apologized for their remarks, and hosted an on air discussion with members of the gay, lesbian, and transgender community.

Clear Channel Media and Entertainment and Blue Chair Records/Columbia Nashville announced Thursday an integrated promotional and marketing partnership to preview Kenny Chesney's new Life On A Rock album, set to release April 30.

Clear Channel will host an exclusive iHeartRadio Album Release Party – featuring a never-been-done-before one hour live conversation and listening session with Chesney in the iHeartRadio Theater in New York City on April 29 at 1 p.m. EST.  The event will be hosted by the syndicated morning show host Bobby Bones of WSIX Nashville.

J-Kruz joins CW ‘Eye Opener' Morning Show

Radio One personality J-Kruz of KBFB 97.9 FM the Beat in Dallas recently joined CW Network’s “Eye Opener Morning Show” as the host and co-producer of the new music segment “The Underground.“

The show features urban independent artists from across the country. The program will air weekday mornings in Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia, Miami, Houston, Portland, Myrtle Beach, and Fort Smith, Ark.

According to The Pittsburgh Courier, the 10 year radio veteran hand picks the artists featured on the show each week.  Childish Gambino, Kat Dahlia, and Jon Conner are a few of the artists recently spotlighted.

Making the transition from radio to television has been a great experience and he welcomes the challenge.

“I’m truly grateful to the staff at CW for giving me this opportunity. I know all sides of radio, but television is new to me and they’re allowing me to learn as I go,“ he said.

“We’re very fortunate to have J-Kruz contributing his in-depth knowledge of new and upcoming artists,” said Justin Allen, the executive producer of “Eye Opener.” “The Underground” has quickly become one of the favorites among viewers and our own producers.”

J-Kruz radio career began in Pittsburgh at WAMO 106.7. The program is a 2 hour syndicated morning news, comedy and variety show that airs weekdays in various cities, he said. It’s a new hip morning show geared to young working adults... it’s not your typical morning show. It covers politics, pop culture, health issues, gossip and more.  “It’s fun and a new approach and the syndication is growing they’ll be adding more cities in the near future,” he continued.

Report: Ann Curry Humiliated At NBC

NBC was not a fun place for Ann Curry to be in the time before her exit from the Today show in June of 2012.

A new book by Brian Stetler entitled Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV exposes the humiliation that Ann suffered at the hands of her co-workers in her final months as anchor.

According to an excerpt published in the New York Times magazine, one employee told Stetler about a day when Ann wore a bright yellow dress which prompted the control room staff to post a picture of her to hold a "Who Wore It Best?" comparison with Big Bird. Even the show's executive producer Jim Bell reportedly got in on the jokes by commissioning a blooper reel of Ann's worst on-air mistakes.

The author also claims that Curry has told her friends that her final months at Today were a form of professional torture.

NPR Moves To New Facilities

National Public Radio began broadcasting over the weekend from its new $201 million headquarters nine blocks north of the Capitol. NPR is consolidating its staff into one location after previously being in several locations. Its personnel have been moving to the new location in stages.

According to Radio World, most of the equipment in the new location is digital and the network hired Rasmus Auctioneers to liquidate its analog gear.

Much of the news staff has migrated to the new facility and the newscasters begin broadcasting from the new location on Friday.

The new facility was designed to accommodate the network’s evolution from a radio broadcaster to a multimedia operation, according to the broadcaster. Key features include a two-story newsroom where news, music and digital staff work together and a 250-seat performance studio. Studios were designed with public viewing areas.

The broadcaster has some 700+ employees.  The new NPR headquarters totals 440, 000 square feet of space.

R.I.P.: Former KONO Radio Personality Don Couser

Don Couser, a legendary KONO on-air radio personality and deejay in the 1960s and 1970s, died early Thursday morning.

He was 72, according to

Couser is remembered as the host original host for the locally produced KONO-TV dance show, “Swingtime,” which was patterned after Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand.”   His Top-40 antics included his beloved, often sassy alter-ego character George the Duck.

“He had a real good duck voice,” recalled Bruce Hathaway, the pioneering radio deejay and personality who welcomed the Rolling Stones on the British band’s first visit to San Antonio in June 1964.

KONO program director Roger Allen praised Couser’s theater-of-the-mind approach and quick wit.

Couser also worked at WOAI and KDOK.  He was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2010.

R.I.P.: Springfield, IL Broadcaster Jeff Hoffman

Longtime Springfield, IL radio personality Jeff Hofmann died at 9:05 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Hospice after a long illness.

He was 60.

Hofmann served as news director and had been part of the “AM Springfield” program on WFMB-AM (Sports Radio 1450) along with Sam Madonia and Paul Pachlhofer since 1998.

According to, Hofmann began his broadcasting career in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and then worked in the Belleville area before moving to Springfield. His first job in Springfield was at 1450 WCVS as a disc jockey in 1981, and the St. Louis native worked at WCVS until 1990. He left to work for United Cerebral Palsy Land of Lincoln as development director.

Hofmann returned to Sports Radio 1450 in 1998, replacing John Hareth as news director and becoming Madonia’s partner on AM Springfield. He took a leave of absence in December to tend to his medical needs.

Massacusetts Governor Deval Patrick took a moment  to call Matty In The Morning on Clear Channel’s WXKS-FM Kiss 108.

The Gov. thanked Matty and crew for their sensitive coverage of the Boston Marathon Tragedy. 

The Gov. also took time to talk about the formation of The One Fund Boston.  It’s being set-up to help people most affected by the bombings Monday, April 15.

Boston Radio: Williams Promoted to VP of Greater Media

Greater Media announces Market Manager Rob Williams has been promoted to Vice President of the company’s Boston-based radio properties, including MAGIC 106.7/WMJX-FM, HOT 96.9/ WBQT-FM, Country 102.5/WKLB-FM, Radio 92.9/WBOS-FM, and 105.7 WROR-FM.

“Rob has done an outstanding job since he joined Greater Media Boston in taking the cluster to the next level,” said Peter H. Smyth, Chairman and Chief Executive Office of Greater Media, Inc. “He is a brilliant strategist and respected leader. We are very proud to have him in our family.”

Williams, who joined Greater Media Boston as the Market Manager in January of 2012, is a veteran radio professional who has led some of the industry’s most successful radio stations over his career. Prior to joining the company, he served as CEO of Digital Brand Connections LLC, a company he co-founded.

Prior to that, Williams was a long time executive with Clear Channel Radio, where he led the company’s largest region by revenue (29 markets including major markets New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston), and later served as President and Market Manager for Clear Channel’s industry leading New York City stations, among them the legendary Z100 and perennial highest billing radio station in the US, WLTW.

He left Clear Channel Radio following that company’s sale in 2008 and became CEO of Internet radio start-up Goom Radio, a service he launched in the US in 2009.

Twitter #Music, a service which'll help you discover tunes based on Twitter activity, doesn't exactly come as a surprise.

Rosa Golijan at reports the social network's been teasing this one for a while and the rumor mill's been steadily churning out its secrets. But, as of Thursday, the service is finally official.

Twitter #Music relies on tweets and engagement to detect which songs and artists are particularly popular. In theory, you should be able to discover something of interest by scrolling through top charts or searching through songs shared by the people you follow. Twitter #Music lets you see which songs and musicians your favorite artists listen to and follow as well.

Sacramento Radio: R-A-D Pulled Off-Air At KRXQ

FRIDAY UPDATE:  An Entercom official is now saying  there’s no definite return date for the syndicated show R-A-D to return to the air.

Rod, Arnie & Dawn have been pulled off the air at Entercom’s KRXQ 98 Rock after a morning show bit about making a  list Top 5 reason To Hate Boston.  The list bit never did air.

But the controversy is heating up. (See original posting, Click Here.)

The trio hope to return to the Sacramento air on Monday. However, Entercom management may reconsider after the following posting to the Rob, Arnie & Dawn website:
...On Wednesday, April 17, our show came under attack from a Sacramento radio host who would love to call himself a 'competitor,' but who instead is just another bottom-feeder looking and hoping for ways to better himself by disparaging and defaming us, our show and others in the local media market.  Outrageously, he came out claiming that we in some way intended or were being insensitive or callous to the victims of the Boston tragedy.   We refuse to stoop to this individual's despicable level, but instead want our listeners to know and understand that we did not, would not, and under no circumstances have intended in any way to have been insensitive, callous, dismissive, disparaging or otherwise to or of the victims of the Boston tragedy.  To the contrary, of course we are and have been sickened, disgusted and angered at whomever the cowards who carried out the senseless and disgraceful terrorist acts and the terrible injuries and harm caused to innocent victims. 
The Nature of our show demands honest, noble and real discussions, debate, emotions and, at times, irreverence. For the past two days we have engaged, for hours, in heated exchanges with one another and with you, our loyal listeners, to try to make sense of the non-sensical acts perpetrated on not just Boston, but our nation as a whole. We have expressed fear, anger, outrage, disbelief, and at times everything from great despair to unbridled hope. During rare moments when there was laughter, it had nothing to do whatsoever with the tragedy, but instead was intended to divert, distract and bring much-needed levity to an awful event and situation. 
For reasons unclear to us, our Sacramento carrier, 98 Rock (KRXQ), allowed itself to be bullied and misled by the local radio host who so grossly distorted truth and facts, and in 98 Rock's ill-judgment, it informed us late Wednesday evening that we are pulled off the air until Monday.  We understand a radio station's desire and instinct to protect itself for economic and political purposes, but this is absurd.  Our Sacramento carrier has elected a knee-jerk reaction to a fabricated and manufactured smear campaign by a local thug who is more than happy and willing to politicize and sensationalize the Boston tragedy for his own short-term gain.  To this, we at the Rob, Arnie and Dawn Show say, you're a sad, pathetic character, shame on you, and shame on 98 Rock and their parent company, Entercom Communications.

Meanwhile, crosstown Ron Geronimo Thursday morning aired clips of the R-A-D show from Wednesday morning.  The trio were heard joking about the "top 5 list" with Arnie claiming he could come up with nine things, discussing how a man whose legs were blown off while watching his girlfriend run could "hold that over her head forever," and asking whether it was too soon for jokes about Boston.

KHTK’s Don Geronimo Slams Rivals

Wednesday’s Don Geronimon show on Sportsradio KHTK 1140 AM began with something Don heard on the Rob, Arnie, and Dawn Show on competing Sacramento, CA station,  Active Rock KRXQ 98 Rock.

Apparently, R-A-D Geronimo heard what he interpreted as making fun of the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy. Don, infuriated, ripped them a new one, according to the station website.  Geronimo mades numerous phone calls to their request line, only to get a cowardly phone screener who would hang up on him when he would ask to be put on the air.

Geronimo told his listeners he heard his rivals start their Wednesday talking about a "Top-5" list of things they hate about Boston.  

"I can understand you want to be contrarian, I can understand you want to  be a shock jock, I can understand you want people to talk about what you're doing, but what kind of stupid asses are you ... to be making jokes about it ... a random top-five list about what you hate about Boston.  I don't get it ... this is not something -- maybe I'm the one with the problem, that, you know, I'm the one that's the shock jock here doing the shock jock radio show and I don't feel good making jokes about what happened in Boston.  I love Boston and it pisses me off what they're presenting."

Miami Radio: WQAM Taps John Renshaw For Mid-Day

WQAM has hired its replacement for Dan Sileo, and the station stayed in-house in doing so.

John Renshaw, who has been hosting weekend shows at WQAM since August, has been moved into the weekday 10 a.m. slot, WQAM program director Jorge Sedano told the Sun-Sentinel Wednesday.

The John Renshaw Show will start Monday, following the Joe Rose Show. Alex Donno, who hosts the Miami Hurricanes in-studio game coverage, will be Renshaw's sidekick.

The 10 a.m. spot had been filled by Sileo before he was fired on March 4 after 11 controversial months at the station. The former Miami Hurricanes football player could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

Steel City Radio: Adults Make BOB #1

More listeners liked BOB WRRK 96.9 FM than any other station in March. The adult hits station moved 6.8-8.2 to topple CC’s rock WDVE 102.5 FM moved 7.3-8.0.

Worth noting from ’65 thru 2009 only KDKA or WDVE had ever been #1.

This month N/T KDKA 7.5-7.1 good for #4.1. All-sports sister KDKA-FM, flagship for the Pirates nudged up 3.5-3.6.

Orlando Ratings: WOMX Scores Best PPMs Every For #1 6+

CBS Radio’s hot AC WOMX Mix 105.1 FM notched another win 9.1-9.3, for its best PPM ever. Followed Cox’s Urban AC WCFB Star 94.1 FM 7.3-7.6 and Clear Channel CHR WXXL 106.7 FM trended upward 6.1 to 7.0.

Cox talker WDBO 96.5 FM (only)  2.0-3.0. Its former AM home, now “ESPN 580,” moves 0.7-0.5-0.4. But non-com N/T WMFE moved 2.5-3.3 to best DBO.

Study: Radio Listening Remains Steady

The Temkin Group has just released a report, Media Use Benchmark, 2013. This data snapshot examines the time spent by U.S. consumers using different media sources and the changes from 2012.

In January 2013 Temkin surveyed 10,000 U.S. consumers about their media use patterns and compared the results to data that we collected in January 2012.

The analysis examines internet usage (at home and at work), reading of books and news (online and offline), TV watching, radio listening, and mobile activity. The data snapshot breaks down the data by age, ethnicity, income, and geographic region.

The first figure in the report (out of 14 total data graphics) shows the overall usage levels in the U.S. for different media activities:

Here are some interesting factoids about media usage in the U.S.:
  • Ninety-eight percent of consumers go online at home, 60% do it at least three hours per day
  • Fifty-seven percent of consumers use their mobile phone for going online or using an app, 16% do it at least three hours per day
  • Sixty-five to 74-year-olds watch the most TV (4.2 hours per day), 18- to 24-year-olds watch the least (3.6 hours per day)
  • All ages of consumers spend more time reading paper books than online books, but the gap is narrower with younger consumers
  • Consumers making less than $25,000 per year watch 4.5 hours per day of TV, those making $100,000 or more watch less than 3.4 hours
  • Thirty-nine percent of consumers making less than $25,000 per year use their mobile phone for going online or using an app, compared with more than 60% of those who earn $75,00 or more
  • The hours that consumers spend watching TV goes down with increasing educational levels
  • Asians spend twice as much time reading online books as do Caucasians
  • African-Americans watch the most TV per day
  • Fifty-four precent of consumers in the South use their mobile phone for going online or using an app, compared with 49% of those in the Midwest

CNN: The Most Busted Name In News

Jon Stewart let CNN have it over its erroneous reporting that an arrest had been made in the case of the Boston Marathon bombing.

According to Mediaite, Stewart mocked how much CNN kept boasting of its “exclusive reporting,” which turned out to be exclusive “because it was completely f#@king wrong,” and was even more blown away by how CNN was subsequently backing away from and questioning that very report. Stewart described this as the network “shit[ting] in their own mouths,” christening CNN “the Human Centipede of News.”

Stewart played a variety of clips in which Wolf Blitzer touted the network’s “exclusive reporting” on the arrest. Stewart said, “It’s exclusive because it was completely fucking wrong!” He also got in a veiled swipe at new CNN head Jeff Zucker for claiming Stewart to be a jealous competitor.

Boston Radio: Stations To Go Silent

Boston Radio station collectively to observe a minute of silence this coming Monday.

The observance at 2:50pm EST will mark the one week anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombs.

Participation by CBS, Clear Channel, Entercom and Greater Media has been announced so far.

The NAB’s Gordon Smith says that at least for Boston, “this moment of silence will serve as a time of reflection, honoring those lost and injured in this tragic event.” But also “recognizing the countless acts of heroism and kindness that we saw on Monday and which continue today.”

Boston Radio: Greater Media Suspends On-Air Contesting

In the wake of the recent tragedy, Greater Media has suspended all on-air listener contesting for the remainder of this week on its Boston-based stations, including WBQT-FM HOT 96.9 FM, WKLB-FM Country 102.5 FM, WMJX-FM Magic 106.7 FM, WBOS-FM Radio 92.9  and WROR-FM 105.7 FM and will be donating the money to THE ONE FUND BOSTON instead.

The new fund, announced by Boston mayor Tom Menino and Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick, has been created to help the people most affected by the tragic events that occurred in Boston on April 15, 2013.

“We discussed it with our team and Greater Media Boston Market Manager Rob Williams and felt that this was absolutely the appropriate thing to do in an effort to help all the individuals directly impacted by the tragic event that took place in our city,” said Director of Programming Cadillac Jack.

Radio Remains A Big Deal

Over the past two decades, the internet has grown to become a video-fast medium we can access almost everywhere, anytime and do almost anything with. It’s been a seismic force impacting the entire media landscape…y’know, the one that we’re still part of. 
It’s affected radio, for sure. Time spent online means time away from broadcast FM and AM. Yet the vitality of our medium has been confirmed by how well it has held up in the face of the ‘net monster. Radio continues to reach around 90% of Americans. 
Still, at this point, I wondered: Just how important is radio in people’s lives? Where does it stand compared to the internet and other media? 
So, in early April, we asked 18-64′s in the U.S. how important the internet and radio are to them, plus TV and newspapers for comparison. Based on 502 telephone interviews, here’s what we learned… 
The internet rules over all. Three-fourths rate it a 4 or 5 on our 5-point scale, where 5 means “very important.” After that, radio and TV score essentially the same, with half rating them 4 or 5. (TV does have a small edge in the percentage rating it very important.)

 From the perspective of age demos, the ‘net has its biggest edge over broadcast media at the young end, as we’d expect. But there is no significant difference between the importance of radio and TV until we get up to 55-64, where TV has the edge. Even among 55-64′s though, radio is significantly more important than newspapers. Here are the average scores:

R&R HOF Induction Celebration Is Tonight

The 28th Annual Rock and Rock Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held tonight at Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has announced additional presenters and performers for the 28th Annual Rock and Rock Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

Four of this year’s inductees — Heart, Randy Newman, Public Enemy and Rush — are confirmed to perform at the event, which will also honor Albert King and Donna Summer; as well as Lou Adler and Quincy Jones, this year’s recipients of the Ahmet Ertegun Award for Lifetime Achievement.

The star-studded event will feature appearances by Usher, who will perform for Quincy Jones; Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready and Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains, who will perform with Heart; Spike Lee and Harry Belafonte, who will pay tribute to Public Enemy; Carole King, who will perform for Lou Adler;  Chris Cornell, who will induct Heart; comedy legends Cheech & Chong, who will present Adler with his award; and Jackson Browne and John Fogerty, who will perform with Randy Newman. John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr. will perform for Albert King, with Mayer giving the induction speech; 1998 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Don Henley will induct Randy Newman; Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Hudson will perform in honor of Donna Summer; and Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters will present Rush.

The induction ceremony will be presented on HBO on Saturday, May 18 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. More talent will be announced prior to the show.

Richmond Radio: The Planet Spins Again

CCM+E has launched The PlanetRichmond’s Only Classic Rock” on a translator facility W295BF 96.1 FM. 

The format is being originated on WRVQ’s HD2 94.5 FM.

The station’s line-up includes Bob & Tom mornings followed by Premium Choice talent.

NYC Radio: WWRL To Air Dr. Joy Browne

Access.1’s Talk station in Gotham has reportedly  has announced that Dr. Joy Browne will be joining the line-up at its WWRL 1600 AM.  Although no time period has been given, the show is expected to start airing this coming Monday 4/22/13.

Browne was let go from its longtime home at WOR 710 AM as Buckley Broadcasting was transferring the station to Clear Channel. 

Dr. Browne’s show is now syndicated by Radio America.

While making the move, WWRL GM Adriane Gaines stated:

 “We are very pleased that Dr. Joy Browne is joining the ‘RL lineup and bringing her on-air advice to our listeners.  Joy’s unique blend of wisdom, balance and practical solutions to coping with life’s challenges has made her one of America’s leading clinical psychologists.”

DC Ratings: WAMU #1 6+, WTOP #1 25-54

As usual N/T WAMU and All-News WTOP top Washington DC March PPMs 6+.

American University’s non-com WAMU is #1 9.4-9.4, while Hubbard’s WTOP is off 8.9-8.0.  CBS Radio’s All-Newser WNEW-FM moved 1.5-1.2.

Hubbard is quick to point out that 25-54, WTOP is #1, tied with Clear Channel’s WIHT Hot 95.5-FM.

Boston Ratings: Greater Media’s WBQT Continues Growth

Looks like Greater Media made the right decision.

In January they  dropped its Talk format on WTKK in favor of Rhythmic AC WBQT as Hot 96.5.  The PPMs show a 2.7 March showing. The trend is upward for the latest three reports 1.8-2.4-2.7.

No one seems to have benefited from the loss of WTKK. Entercom’s WRKO shows 2.6-2.5 and CBSRadio’s WBZ 7.2-6.2 for March.
