R.I.P.: Shane Gibson, Former Buffalo Radio Personality

The Buffalo Broadcasting community is mourning the passing of Hall of Fame radio DJ Shane Gibson, better known as Shane Brother Shane. Gibson died in Virginia Monday at age 78, according to WBEN 930 AM's website.

Gibson first came to Buffalo in the mid 1970s as part of WKBW's Great American Talent Hunt, to find the station's next evening DJ. Sandy Beach was with Gibson on Shane's first day. "When they came in, they would go on the air at the end of my show and the start of their show. On his first night, I broke Shane in," says Beach. "He was an over the top guy. He was never judged the same way as other people were."

Gibson worked at WKBW, WYSL, and WGR.

Beach recalls Jeff Kaye bringing Shane in. "Jeff told me Shane's changing into his costume. I said what? Who wears a costume to be on the radio? He says Shane's changing into a pair jeans that said Shane on one leg. I said, this will be an interesting guy, and he was," notes Beach. "His on the presentation was always different than anybody else. He didn't copy anyone else, he was an original. In days where a lot of people had their favorite disc jockey and tried to copy them, he was his own man."

Beach says Gibson would return to town from time to time. "He would touch base with all of us, former KB people," says Beach. He adds Gibson will be remembered by those who listened to him.

Gibson was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2011.
