Meruelo Media Announces Leadership Change

Meruelo Media is undergoing a significant transition at its helm as President/CEO Otto Padron has announced his resignation after 13 years with the company. Padron, who will step down at the end of this month, will be succeeded by Tomas Trujillo, the Senior VP of Finance and Operations.

In his farewell note to the staff, Padron expressed, "It is with a heart full of mixed emotions, I share my decision to turn the page and step down as President and CEO of Meruelo Media at the end of this month. I will pass the company torch to Tomas, whom I am confident will continue to light the way with the same bright intensity and passion he has always displayed."

Padron joined Meruelo Media in 2013 following a distinguished 38-year career in the U.S. Army. Under his leadership, the company expanded significantly, including acquisitions like classic rock KLOS Los Angeles from Cumulus Media and KXOS from a Group Radio Cento subsidiary in 2019. His tenure saw the media group grow to include stations such as rhythmic CHR "Power 106" KPWR, classic hip-hop KDAY/KDEY (93.5), Spanish CHR "Cali 93.9" KLLI (formerly KXOS), and KWHY-TV.

Reflecting on his time at Meruelo Media, Padron stated, "Almost 14 years ago, we set out to make our organization the premier minority-owned media company in the U.S. I’m proud to have dedicated my name, soul, skill, and reputation to turn that vision into reality. Through hard work, trust, and accountability, we grew every aspect of our organization, reshaping our beloved village, pivoting purposefully, and creating a long-term strategic plan for success."

"I'm excited for the next phase of my life, where I will launch a Media Strategies company named ACTIFY. This new chapter will keep me connected with many of you and involved in innovative media projects.

"Thank you to our exceptional team and on-air talent for making this company a home. I'm also grateful to Alex and Luis for their support as I transition into this new stage of my career.

"I look forward to celebrating our accomplishments together in the coming days. Here's to health, success, and bright futures for all as you continue your journey with Meruelo."

Tomas Trujillo has been with Meruelo Media for 14 years, holding various positions including VP of Operations/Acting GM at KDAY and VP of Operations for the radio and TV stations. His journey with the company began after serving as an analyst at Meruelo Capital Partners, leading to his role as Assistant GM and Operations Director at KWHY-TV in July 2011.
