FOX News' Greg Gutfeld! Makes The Cover Of...Variety

Greg Gutfeld might seem like a fresh face to some, but to a substantial and expanding chunk of Fox News viewers, he’s the current kingpin.

Much like Megyn Kelly shaped the network during the waning Obama years with her razor-sharp interviewing prowess, or Bill O’Reilly reigned supreme in the Bush-Cheney era, Gutfeld has emerged as the channel’s newest standout.

A front cover story in Variety on Gutfeld exams his role as Fox’s rising comedic provocateur,  His role was solidified when he sat down with Trump for a live-audience taping of “Gutfeld!” during the peak of the 2024 presidential race. With his biting, no-nonsense humor, Gutfeld has climbed so high that it’s almost surprising to recall that Fox News has typically flourished as the scrappy counterweight to those in charge. Yet here’s Gutfeld, effortlessly bouncing between late-night gigs and daytime slots (like his co-hosting stint on “The Five”) with a finesse that defies the usual rules.

For Gutfeld, skewering liberal double standards is like shooting fish in a barrel.

In the cable news arena, he hosts a celebrity-free show that dives into divisive topics, armed with a dry, cutting sarcasm that stands in stark contrast to the chipper or eccentric vibes of his rivals. Gutfeld is an improbable late-night titan.

Opting for a panel-style format over the standard one-on-one of his competitors, “Gutfeld!” brings together a motley crew of regulars—think comedian Rob Schneider and Vincent Gallo—whose cultural relevance had faded until they leaned hard into the right. He claims his competitors are hemorrhaging viewers because they’re shackled to “a rigid, predictable groupthink” that kills any chance at real humor.

At 60, and an unabashed Trump supporter, Gutfeld is somehow pulling in a younger, more politically varied crowd than the rest. Indeed, “Gutfeld!” is outperforming heavyweights like “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” “Real Time With Bill Maher,” and “The Daily Show” across the board, perfectly positioned to surf the Trump 2.0 tide.
