Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Sheryl Crow over the weekend made a bold statement by selling her black Tesla in protest of Elon Musk's influence as "President Musk."
In an Instagram post on Friday, the 63-year-old singer announced that she had parted ways with the electric vehicle and would be donating the proceeds to NPR, an organization Musk has repeatedly targeted for defunding through his Department of Government Efficiency's efforts to reduce federal spending.
Crow accompanied the viral clip with a caption stating, "My parents always said… you are who you hang out with. There comes a time when you have to decide who you are willing to align with. So long Tesla." The singer appeared unfazed by the decision, even smiling as a tow truck hauled the Tesla away.
While some of Crow's followers criticized the move, labeling her as "elite" and accusing her of supporting "wasteful government spending," the "Soak Up the Sun" singer remained steadfast in her decision. Although she did not disclose the exact amount she received for the Tesla, which has a starting price of $42,000, Crow pledged to donate all the proceeds to NPR, which receives approximately 1% of its funding from the federal government.
"Money donated to @npr, which is under threat by President Musk, in hopes that the truth will continue to find its way to those willing to know the truth," Crow wrote, incorporating hashtags such as #PresidentMusk, #PresidentTrump, and #ProtectTheConstitution.
I know celebrities are hesitant to weigh in on hot button issues, so I appreciate Sheryl Crow making an argument here—not through words alone, but through her actions— that Congress should not force taxpayers to subsidize NPR.

Musk has recently intensified his calls to eliminate NPR's federal funding as part of DOGE's cost-cutting measures across various government agencies. The Tesla CEO has alleged that NPR exhibits biased news coverage, a sentiment echoed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who announced on Monday that she would hold a hearing to investigate whether NPR and PBS had disregarded stories unfavorable to the Biden administration. "Defund NPR. It should survive on its own," Musk declared on X Tuesday.
Crow has been vocal about her disapproval of President Trump, his administration, and his conservative policies. On Election Day, she revealed that she had voted for Kamala Harris, citing the candidate's "empathy, compassion, a heart for community and for those underserved" as opposed to "hate and division, bigotry, or racism."
