Greg Sharpe, who had been the play-by-play announcer for Nebraska football since 2007, passed away on Friday after battling cancer, as announced by his family through the university on Saturday. He was 61 years old.
Sharpe succumbed to pancreatic cancer, a diagnosis he revealed 10 months prior, though he managed to broadcast several games during the last season.
"Greg’s vibrant calls during Husker football and baseball games brought happiness to many over the past 17 seasons," his family stated. "We find solace in knowing his legacy will endure through the memorable moments he described and the relationships he fostered. While he was known publicly for his resonant voice and lively character, those nearest to him cherished his loyalty and commitment."
For 17 years, Greg Sharpe spoke past the microphone and into our hearts.

In December, the National Sports Media Association honored him as Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year. Additionally, last month, the athletic department dedicated his pressbox workspace, naming it the "Greg Sharpe Radio Booth."
Athletic Director Troy Dannen expressed, "Today is a difficult day for all of us, not just for those who knew Greg personally or worked with him, but also for Husker fans who recall his narration of significant moments in Nebraska’s history. Greg was a remarkable individual and a friend to all. He truly embodied the spirit of a Husker and will forever remain one."
