The new top banana in local morning radio, Ricardo "El
Mandril" Sanchez of regional Mexican music station KLAX 97.9 FM, not only
held onto No. 1 in July but also widened his lead in the Los Angeles-Orange
County ratings, according to figures released Monday by Arbitron.
According to the LA Times, Sanchez grabbed 5.9% of the 6+ listening
audience from 6 to 10 a.m. weekdays, far ahead of talk station KFI-640 AM,
which airs Bill Handel's local program and the first hour of Rush Limbaugh's
nationally syndicated show during that period, and Kevin Ryder and Gene
"Bean" Baxter on alternative rock station KROQ 106.7 FM. They tied
for second with a 4.7% audience share.
In June, by comparison, Sanchez claimed 5.3% of listeners,
while the KFI programs took 5%.
Meanwhile, in the overall station rankings, KBIG 104.3 FM and
102.7 KIIS-FM continued their battle for the top spot, with the former edging
out its Top 40 sister station this time around.
