GR Radio: Not Making Money Isn’t Funny

After less than two years in an all-comedy format, local radio station WNWZ 1410 AM is now getting "The Touch," according to mlive.com.

Today, the Townsquare Media-owned radio outlet begins airing The Touch satellite network, spinning a mix of "Today's R&B and Old School" music artists.

Fitting the broader radio category of urban adult contemporary, The Touch blend features 1980s and '90s artists such as Whitney Houston and The Isley Brothers plus contemporary acts such as Usher and Alicia Keys.

Although there was some positive listener response to their comedy format, local townsquare GM/VP Russ Hines said Townsquare began discussing a change last April.

"From the advertising community we weren't having much success," he explained.

The Touch format is not new to Grand Rapids. It was carried several years ago by the former WJNZ-AM 1140. Some programming from that station ended up on the current WYGR-1530 AM/ 94.9 FM, but not The Touch affiliation.

Townsquare Media also owns and operates four other Grand Rapids radio stations, including WFGR 98.7 FM, WGRD 97.9 FM, WLHT 95.7 FM, and WTRV 100.5 FM.
