The Republican National Committee is unhappy with NBC and
CNN's recently-announced plans to create shows about Hillary Clinton, and is
threatening not to partner with the two networks to air any of the GOP's 2016
presidential primary debates if they don't drop the idea.
NBC announced last month that it's creating a four-hour miniseries
about Clinton starring Diane Lane as the former secretary of state, first lady
and potential 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, and CNN is producing a
documentary about her that will first debut in theaters next year and then air
on the cable channel.
In a letter to the heads of both networks, RNC Chairman
Reince Priebus charged the networks with a, quote, "thinly-veiled attempt
at putting a thumb on the scales of the 2016 presidential election,"
writing, "Out of a sense of fairness and decency and in the interest of
the political process and your company's reputation, I call on you to cancel
this political ad masquerading as an unbiased production."
In response, NBC News pointed to the separation between
their entertainment and news divisions, writing, "NBC News is completely
independent of NBC Entertainment and has no involvement in this project."
For its part, CNN urged the RNC to wait and see the final
product, advising against making what it called "premature decisions"
and saying limiting debate participation would be, quote, "the ultimate
disservice to voters."
