Twitter Troubles Weigh on Revenue Growth

Twitter Inc. added more users in the latest quarter but said its pace of revenue growth slowed sharply because of technical bugs that hurt its advertising business.

The Wall Street Journal reports shares plunged roughly 20% in premarket trading Thursday as revenue and profit in the third quarter fell short of Wall Street expectations and the company’s outlook for the current quarter trailed analysts’ forecasts.

The social-media company said the number of people who use its platform daily increased by 6 million from the second quarter to 145 million. The improvement follows changes designed to serve users more relevant content, enabling them to follow topics of interest. Analysts polled by FactSet had estimated Twitter would add roughly 3 million daily users.

Revenue rose 9% from a year ago to $824 million, marking the smallest annual increase since late 2017 and below the $873.9 million that analysts polled by FactSet were expecting. Twitter blamed software malfunctions associated with its ability to target ads and share user data with advertisers.

Third-quarter profit totaled $37 million, or 5 cents a share, down from $789.2 million, or $1.02 a share, in the prior-year period; the 2018 third quarter included a large tax benefit.

The challenges with Twitter’s advertising business was a surprise to most analysts, said Cascend analyst Eric Ross. “No one was talking about this,” he said. “The results were much worse from a revenue-peruser standpoint than we were expecting. This is shocking given the growth in daily active users.”

Earlier this week, Snap Inc. said the number of daily Snapchat users rose by seven million in the third quarter to 210 million, though that growth was smaller than the 13 million users it gained in the second quarter.

Facebook Inc. is slated to release its quarterly report next week.

High Profile Exits In Phoenix and Portland

It has not been a good week for radio talent, especially those in morning drive.

Mac Watson, half of the popular “Mac & Gaydos” talk-show duo at KTAR 92.3 FM, is no longer at the station.

Ryan Hatch, the vice president for content and operations at Bonneville Phoenix, confirmed that Watson was gone; his last day on the air was Wednesday, Oct. 16.

"Beyond that, we have no comment," Hatch said.

"I can confirm I’m no longer at KTAR," Watson told The Arizona Republic on Wednesday morning.

"Choices are made by us and some are foisted upon us. This choice is unexpected, but a beginning, not an end."

Meanwhile KTAR changed the branding of the show on its website, on its Facebook page and its Twitter page to “Gaydos in the Afternoon.” The show airs from 2 to 6 p.

Watson joined KTAR-FM in September 2007 from WRVA Richmond. He also hosted talk shows at KWTX Waco and worked at music stations including WWDC and WWZZ Washington DC, WWMX Baltimore, and KHFI Austin.

Also this week, longtime morning hosts Mikel Chase and Amy Faust are out at Entercom's County KWJJ 99.5 The Wolf.

Mike & Amy first hosted mornings at KWJJ from 1999-2012 and returned in 2014.

Chase and Faust are the second morning show to exit Entercom Portland recently. Buck Wise exited Hot AC KRSK 105.1 The Buzz at the end of August.

Meanwhile, Entercom Country KMLE 107.9 FM in Phoenix has parted company with morning hosts Maria Knight and Chad Mitchell.

Knight and Mitchell joined KMLE this past February as part of a morning show swap with sister Classic Hits 94.5 KOOL-FM.

Zuckerberg Takes The Heat In D-C

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg traveled to Washington Wednesday to defend a cryptocurrency project that has become the latest target of lawmakers frustrated with the social media giant.

The NY Times reports he ended up answering a smorgasbord of questions on other issues on Wednesday, as members of the House Financial Services Committee took him to task for everything from political advertising and disinformation campaigns to work force diversity and child pornography.

Representative Maxine Waters, the Democratic committee chairwoman, set the tone of the hearing early. She grilled Mr. Zuckerberg on Facebook’s willingness to allow unfettered speech across the platform and its recent decision to avoid vetting political advertising.

“The impact of this will be a massive voter suppression effort. Your claim to promote freedom of speech does not ring true,” Ms. Waters said.

In recent months lawmakers have spared neither Facebook nor Mr. Zuckerberg. On Wednesday, that criticism became more than five hours of political theater, making it glaringly apparent just how skeptical of Facebook Congress has become through nearly three years of controversy.

The company now faces several investigations by regulators in a number of countries and by 47 state attorneys general, as well as increasing calls that it should be broken up into a number of smaller, less powerful companies.

Mr. Zuckerberg acknowledged his company has a trust problem. “I get that I’m not the ideal messenger for this right now,” he said. “We certainly have work to do to build trust.”

Despite occasional stumbles, Mr. Zuckerberg, accompanied by a nearly full front row of Facebook lawyers, top lobbyists and public relations executives, stayed calm under the harsh questioning.

Redstone: ViacomCBS Has What It Takes To Compete

Shari Redstone said the combination of Viacom Inc. and CBS Inc., the companies that make up her family’s media empire, will create a content giant that can compete with larger industry rivals, even if she doesn’t pursue additional mergers, reports The Wall Street Journal.

CBS and Viacom announced a deal in August that is expected to close late this year, creating a new company, ViacomCBS Inc. Ms. Redstone, president of National Amusements Inc., the holding company that controls Viacom and CBS, dismissed concerns that ViacomCBS will be too small compared with Walt Disney Co. , Netflix Inc., AT&T Inc.’s WarnerMedia and other media giants.
Shari Redstone (WSJ Photo)

“We can compete with the best of them—not only do we create a quantity of content, we actually create content people actually want to watch,” she said, speaking at the WSJ Tech Live conference in Laguna Beach, Calif.

Ms. Redstone said the companies spend a combined $13 billion a year on content and have 22% of TV viewership in the U.S. “I don’t think we’re given credit for what our future is,” she said.

Investors haven’t reacted well to the proposed merger. Viacom and CBS shares are down some 23% since the August announcement, which has shaved about $7 billion off the roughly $30 billion valuation of the combined companies at the time of the deal.

Asked why Wall Street has punished the stocks, Ms. Redstone said the traditional media industry in general is subject to a lot of questions. “The landscape is changing for everybody,” she said.

She also said ViacomCBS has to show that it can meld the two cultures and get everyone on the same page.

“We have to prove that we can execute on that strategy in order to get the confidence of the market,” she said.

Analyst: Expect Disney+ To Have 18M Subs In A Year

Disney+ is projected to have 8 million subscribers at launch and 18 million by the end of 2020, according to one stock media analyst projection.

MediaPost reports Michael Nathanson, senior research analyst at MoffettNathanson Research, says the expected surge is largely due to this week's news of a deal: Verizon will give the Disney+ premium video service free for the first year to its new and existing customers.

By the end of 2020, of the 18 million subscribers, Disney+ could have just under 9 million U.S. subscribers from Verizon alone, Nathanson estimates.

Disney+ is set to launch on November 12 at an initial monthly price of $6.99, or a yearly subscription of $69.99/year.

But there are other discounts, including one heavy discount for D23 members (The official Disney Fan Club) if those consumers commit to three years with a prepayment of $141 (or $3.92/month). In addition, it is offering another three-year deal of $170 ($4.72/month) for Disney Parks guests.

Nathanson estimates that of Verizon's 33.9 million customers, only about 17.7 million will be eligible for the free Disney+ offering, and about half of those will opt in for the Disney+ deal.

Megaphone-totin’ Rudy and his Connecticut Yankees band were mainstays on radio into the late 1940s.

The accident was famously referred to as "The Day the Music Died" in Don McLean's 1971 song "American Pie".

Edison: Super Podcast Listeners Are Valuable Targets For Advertisers

Weekly podcast listeners who consume more than five hours of podcasts per week are the subject of the first-ever Super Listeners study from PodcastOne and Edison Research.

These podcasting “Super Listeners,” podcasting’s heaviest listeners, have emerged as valuable targets for advertisers and trusted allies for podcast sponsors according to this groundbreaking study.
  • Seventy percent of Super Listeners say they have considered a new product or service as a result of hearing an ad on a podcast.
  • More than half (57%) of Super Listeners consume more than 8 hours per week of podcast content, which means their potential exposure to podcast advertising is high relative to the rest of the podcast audience.

The topline findings from the study were debuted last week at the IAB Podcast Upfront in New York, and complete findings were presented in a live, online presentation earlier today by PodcastOne CEO Peter Morris and Edison Research SVP Tom Webster.

According to Edison Research Senior Vice President, Tom Webster, “We were very eager to look at the heaviest users of podcasting as a kind of “early warning system” for the efficacy of podcasting advertisement, since they will have had more exposure to podcast advertising than anyone. What we found was that not only don’t they mind podcast ads—they actually have a very positive effect, which is even more remarkable when you consider that Super Listeners are otherwise engaging in active ad avoidance behavior.”

“As the industry leader, we wanted to provide this first of its kind study to deliver meaningful details on the habits of podcasting’s most loyal consumers. We believe this will be a great benefit to the industry as a whole,” said PodcastOne CEO, Peter Morris. “Edison is the recognized authority for research in podcasting. We’re proud to be the first podcast company to work with them, beginning when PodcastOne was founded in 2012, and continue to do so to ensure our advertising partners receive the best audience insights and analysis to maximize their campaign goals.”

  • Despite the fact that 50% of Super Listeners are actively trying to limit their exposure to commercials across all video and audio platforms, 44% agree that they pay more attention to advertising on podcasts than other media, and 37% say podcasts are the best way for an advertiser to reach them.
  • Six in ten Super Listeners appreciate podcast advertisers for supporting their favorite podcasts, and 44% say they think more positively about companies that advertise on the podcasts they regularly listen to.
  • Super Listeners identify podcasts as the mainstream medium least likely to have too many ads; however, nearly half (49%) indicate that they have noticed an increase in podcast advertising over the last year. Thirty-five percent of Super Listeners perceive that advertising breaks in podcasts have gotten longer; 59% believe that they have not changed. Thus, the industry must be cognizant to maintain the premium element of these ads.
This industry-wide study showcases the power of podcasting’s most active consumers, including how they react to advertising, the role ads play in their listening experience, and what the industry must be cautious about in maximizing advertising impact. The presentation is now available for download and the webinar is available for viewing.
