Tropical Storm Dolly formed Thursday morning in the central Atlantic, becoming the fourth named storm of the 2026 hurricane season, the National Hurricane Center said.
The storm was located about 1,555 miles east of the Caribbean’s Leeward Islands at 11 a.m. EDT Thursday, moving west at 24 mph with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. Forecasters said it organized overnight but is expected to be short-lived. Hostile environmental conditions beginning Friday, Aug. 28, are likely to prevent further development.
The name Dolly comes from a rotating World Meteorological Organization list used for Atlantic storms and has no connection to singer Dolly Parton’s death on Aug. 25.
Retired NOAA meteorologist Roger Edwards called the timing an “astounding coincidence.”
AccuWeather meteorologists said Atlantic conditions this season have generally limited tropical storm growth. Lead hurricane expert Alex DaSilva said that if the system held together long enough, it could become worth watching for the U.S. East Coast, though that assessment was issued before the storm was named.
