NYC Radio: Hit-And-Run Driver Escapes Jail In Death of DeeJay

Jean Paul Guerrero
Plea deal spares jail time for driver in Brooklyn hit-and-run that killed WSKQ 97.9 FM DJ Jinx Paul in 2016.

The NY Daily News reports devastated dad Humberto Guerrero was crushed Tuesday when his son’s hit-and-run killer took a plea deal with no jail time for the wreck that killed popular local radio personality Jean Paul Guerrero.

The deal will give Kevin Ozorio, of Manhattan, five years of probation and 100 hours in a program that includes a community service component. Sentencing was set for May 1.

“We are dismayed by this horrible nightmare that’s just ended,” added Humberto Guerrero, speaking in Spanish after regaining his composure. “But sadly, the justice isn’t so good here, and I’m speaking honestly.”

The victim’s cousin Gina Zarate said the entire family was crushed to watch Guerrero’s killer leave the courtroom without a sentence of even one day behind bars. The defendant pleaded to a count of leaving the scene of an accident with a death.

Authorities said Ozorio crashed his 2010 Honda Accord into Guerrero as the 97.9-FM host crossed the street around 4 a.m. near Sheffield and Jamaica Aves. The impact shattered the vehicle’s windshield, with Ozorio later driving the damaged car to an auto body shop for repairs caused by the deadly collision.

Guerrero was left lying mortally wounded in the street and died at Brookdale Hospital, while Ozorio surrendered to police five days later.
