NYC Radio: MLB Mets Radio Voice Falls Ill

The New York Mets charter flight Thursday to Losa Angeles was forced to make an emergency landing in Detroit after long time radio broadcaster Howie Rose began feeling ill on the trip.

The Mets began a six game west coast road trip at Chavez Ravine against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday Night. The 61-year-old voice of the Mets sought medical attention in the Motor City and has been advised to skip to trip due to a “non-life threatening” condition and rejoin the team next Friday at Citi Field when they begin a three game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Josh Lewin and backup play-by-play voice Wayne Randazzo will have the call on the WOR 710 AM Mets Radio Network during the remainder of the road trip.

Rose’s connection with the New York Mets began in 1987 as the host of “Mets Extra”, a pre and post game show prior to each game on WFAN radio. By 1996, he would join former big league catcher Fran Healy on the club’s television broadcasts, before moving to radio as the primary play-by-play voice in 2004, replacing original team broadcaster Bob Murphy.
