R.I.P.: Mike Price, Iconic Central NY Broadcaster

Mike Price (1938-2025)

Mike Price, a Central New York broadcasting legend, passed away at the age of 87, as announced by NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) on Tuesday.

No specific cause of death was disclosed in the available reports.

Price had a 46-year career at WSYR-TV (previously WNYS-TV and WIXT-TV), retiring on July 9, 2008. He was celebrated for his iconic "Baron Daemon" character, a bumbling vampire he debuted in 1962 to host late-night movies and later an afternoon children’s show, "The Baron and His Buddies," which aired until 1967. The character, pronounced "Day-MOAN," became a local sensation, drawing crowds at public appearances and even inspiring a song, "The Transylvania Twist."

In his later career, Price was known for his "Good News" segments, closing NewsChannel 9 broadcasts with uplifting, human-interest stories that resonated with the Syracuse community. His contributions extended beyond broadcasting; he was a dedicated volunteer, emcee, and public speaker, notably active at the Great New York State Fair, telethons, and parades. Price also served 30 years in the Coast Guard Reserves, including active duty during the Gulf War, which led to an award-winning documentary, "Into the Gulf."

A Syracuse native, Price attended Syracuse University, played freshman football, and trained at the Academy of Broadcasting Arts in New York City. He began his career at WSOQ Radio in North Syracuse and earned the Syracuse Press Club’s highest honor in 2004, with a plaque on their Wall of Distinction. Tributes on X and local media highlighted his kindness, professionalism, and lasting impact, with many calling him a "class act" and a "Syracuse legend."
