TV Ratings: All Three Cable News Nets Saw Drops Last Week


The post-holiday period was not kind to networks as all three cable nets saw a drop in their week-to-week numbers in total viewers and the prized demo of Adults 25-54. MSNBC and CNN saw steeper drops as they were down double digits in total viewers and the demo during primetime. CNN was the only network to see a double-digit fall during the total day.

TV News reports Nielsen live plus same-day data for the week of September 2 saw FNC average 2.226 million total viewers and 277,000 A25-54 viewers during primetime. The network was down in total viewers by -4% and -3% in the A25-54 demo relative to the week prior (the week beginning August 26). Fox News averaged 1.354 million total viewers and 176,000 A25-54 viewers in total day viewing. It was down -2% in total viewers and the demo from what it averaged in those measurements the week prior.

Among all basic cable networks, Fox News remained at to No. 1 in total primetime viewers and second in the demo. In total day, it continued to lead in total viewers and was second in the total day demo for the week of September 2.

MSNBC in primetime averaged 1,109,000 total viewers and 112,000 viewers in the A25-54 demo for the week of September 2. The network dropped in total viewers by -14% and -22% in the demo compared to its average the week prior. Among all basic cable networks, MSNBC was No.3 in total primetime viewers and dropped from seventh to 12th in the demo.

CNN averaged 662,000 total primetime viewers and 123,000 A25-54 viewers in the demo during primetime for the week of September 2. CNN fell in total viewers by -36% and -37% in the demo compared to the previous week. CNN fell to fifth place in primetime with total viewers and eighth in the demo.

Fox News occupied 12 of the 15 spots of the most-watched cable news shows of the week, with The Five staying on top with 3.246 million viewers at 5 p.m. ET. MSNBC occupied the remaining spots, with Deadline: White House with Nicole Wallace landing at No. 5 with 1.761 million viewers at 5 p.m. ET.

Last week, The Five averaged 3.2 million viewers and 331,000 in the 25-54 demo, making it the most-watched show of the week with viewers. At 6 PM/ET, Special Report with Bret Baier drew 2.2 million viewers and 243,000 in the 25-54 demo. The Ingraham Angle saw 2.3 million viewers and 249,000 in the 25-54 demo at 7 PM/ET. At 8 PM/ET, Jesse Watters Primetime delivered 3 million viewers and 360,000 in the 25-54 demo. At 9 PM/ET, Hannity posted 2.9 million viewers and 373,000 with A25-54, making it the top cable news show in the demo. At 11 PM/ET, FOX News @ Night secured 1.4 million viewers and 227,000 in the 25-54 demo.

FOX News Channel’s Gutfeld! was the highest-rated program in late-night television for the week. Gutfeld! averaged 2.6 million viewers and 363,000 in the 25-54 demo, topping CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (1,799,000 P2+; 299,000 A25-54), NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (1,469,000 P2+) and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! (1,246,000 P2+; 219,000 A25-54).

Daytime Shows: FNC also saw a number of programs outrank the broadcast competition. Most notably, Outnumbered (weekdays, 12 PM/ET; 1,805,000 P2+), America Reports with Sandra Smith and John Roberts (weekdays, 1-3 PM/ET; 1,672,000), The Story with Martha MacCallum (weekdays, 3 PM/ET; 1,654,000 P2+), Harris Faulkner’s The Faulkner Focus (weekdays, 11 AM/ET; 1,645,000 P2+) and America’s Newsroom with Dana Perino and Bill Hemmer (weekdays, 9-11 AM/ET; 1,601,000 P2+) all outpaced NBC’s Today with Hoda and Jenna (1,315,000 P2+) and ABC’s GMA3 (1,148,000 P2+).

On Saturday: Cavuto Live (weekends, 10 AM - 12 PM/ET) was the most-watched show of the day with 1,326,000 viewers (118,000 in the 25-54 demo), while FOX News Saturday Night with Jimmy Failla (weekends, 10 PM/ET) was most-watched in the 25-54 demo with 149,000 viewers. The Big Weekend Show (weekdays, 7 PM/ET) posted 1.2 million viewers, and Life, Liberty & Levin (weekends, 8 PM/ET) saw 1.3 million viewers.

On Sunday: Jason Chaffetz guest-hosted Sunday Morning Futures (Sunday, 10 AM/ET) and it was the top show of the day with 1.5 million viewers and 175,000 in the 25-54 demo. Life, Liberty & Levin (weekends, 8 PM/ET) was the most-watched show in primetime with 1.4 million viewers. Sunday Night in America at 9 PM/ET followed with 1.3 million viewers.

📺BROADCAST EVENING NEWS:

“World News Tonight with David Muir” stood as the No. 1 program of the week in Total Viewers (6.976 million) on all of broadcast and cable (excluding sports) during the week of Sept. 2, 2024, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” has been the No. 1 most-watched program on television for 24 weeks this season (with and without sports).

“World News Tonight” ranked as the No. 1 newscast on all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (6.976 million), Adults 25-54 (915,000) and Adults 18-49 (618,000). “World News Tonight” out-delivered “NBC Nightly News” (5.763 million, 845,000 and 543,000, respectively) by 1.213 million Total Viewers, by 70,000 Adults 25-54 and by 75,000 Adults 18-49, respectively.

Season to date, “World News Tonight” (7.732 million) is ranking No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 8th straight year based on Most Current Data. “World News Tonight” is leading “NBC Nightly News” (6.461 million) by 1.271 million and “CBS Evening News” (4.656 million) by 3.076 million.

For the week, “World News Tonight” (6.976 million, 915,000 and 618,000, respectively) defeated “CBS Evening News” (4.309 million, 599,000 and 383,000, respectively) by 2.667 million Total Viewers, by 316,000 Adults 25-54 and by 235,000 Adults 18-49.

Nightly News is the only evening newscast to grow across the board vs. last week up +162,000 in total viewers, +94,000 in A25-54 and +47,000 in A18-49. Nightly News narrows total viewer and A25-54 demo gaps vs. ABC in year-over-year, season-to-date and week-over-week measurements by double digital percentages 

Nightly News continues its best start of the season vs. ABC in 4 years (since 2019-20) across the board 

Nightly News is #2 most-watched show of the week with 5.763 million total viewers, excluding specials, sports & syndication.
