Harris Baited Trump Into a Debate on Her Terms

Vice President Kamala Harris repeatedly went on offense in a fiery debate against former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, as the two clashed on the economy, abortion, foreign policy and the size of their rally crowds.

“You’re not running against Joe Biden, you’re running against me,” Harris declared at one point, encapsulating how drastically the contest had shifted following President Biden’s exit after his disastrous June debate performance.

Trump and Harris—in their first formal meeting ever—shook hands at the start of their face-off, a formality Trump and President Biden skipped in their June debate. Harris, dressed in a dark suit, walked over to Trump’s side of the stage and introduced herself by saying, “Kamala Harris.”

The meeting showcased a stark height difference between the vice president and the Republican nominee, who sported a red tie. He’s 6 feet, 3 inches tall, and she’s 5 feet, 4 inches tall.

The Wall Street Journal reports the two quickly launched into a sharp exchange on the economy, as Harris declared herself a champion of the middle class, and Trump touted his plans for tariffs. He blasted her for overseeing a period of sharp inflation that has eased, but left many Americans still reeling.

The 59-year-old Harris delivered a far stronger appearance than the dismal showing by President Biden in June that stoked Democratic fears of a Trump landslide victory — with the former prosecutor avoiding major gaffes and deflecting potentially damaging questions about her record and evolving stances on a range of major issues.

The VP was helped by her opponent, who proved unable to resist when Harris used what she described as Trump’s strategy of “lies, grievances and name calling” against him.
