Charlotte Radio: CCM+E Launches Fox Sports 98-7

CCM+E/Charlotte Wednesday launched Charlotte’s first sports station on the FM dial.

It's Fox Sports 98-7 with Andy Furman and Mike North in morning drive followed by Dan Patrick at 9 a.m. to noon. Steve Gorman will be carried on afternoon drive time.

Until Wednesday Charlotte had three sports stations already; but, was one of only five regions among the nation’s top 25 radio markets without an FM sports station. Though it will broadcast on W254AZ and on WRFX 99.7 FM HD2, the translator signal is expected to reach most of Mecklenburg County and should be audible as far south as Rock Hill, giving it reach in the most populous region of the metro area.

Charlotte’s existing AM sports stations WFNZ-610 AM The Fan, WZGV 730 AM ESPN and WBCN 1660 AM all have signal handicaps.

Jeff Kent, afternoon host and longtime program director for WRFX, will be program director for the new FM voice.

Kent said a rumored deal with the NBA Hornets “would be speculation at this point. We would be very interested in discussing (a contract with the team).”

The Hornets, last heard on WFNZ-AM, have made no commitments for 2014-15, the franchise’s first season with the Hornets name since 2002. Through last season, the Charlotte team was known as the Bobcats.
