‘Homeland’, ‘Modern Family’ Dominate Emmy Award

Homeland is the latest Emmy darling. The Showtime series dominated the drama categories at Sunday night's Emmy Awards -- scoring honors as Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor and Actress for Damian Lewis and Claire Danes, as well as the award for Outstanding Writing.

Modern Family continued its reign in the comedy categories, winning Outstanding Comedy Series for the third year in a row. Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet were both repeat winners in the supporting categories while Steve Levitan also scored an award for Outstanding Directing. However there was a changing of the guard in the lead actor and actress categories, with Jon Cryer and Julia Louis-Dreyfus scoring the big awards in their field

Another big winner was Louis C.K., who brought home two awards; for writing both Louie and his standup special Live at the Beacon Theatre.

In the Miniseries/Movie categories, Game Change emerged as the champion, winning Outstanding Miniseries or TV Movie and Outstanding Directing, while Julianne Moore scored the lead actress honor for her portrayal of Sarah Palin.

Elsewhere, Tom Bergeron won as outstanding reality host for Dancing With the Stars, while The Amazing Race won for outstanding reality competition series. Jon Stewart continued his dominance in the Variety category.

In Case You Missed It...Kimmel's Opening Skit

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jimmy Kimmel staged one of his famous pranks: Tracy Morgan laid down on the stage and he told the viewers to tweet or write on Facebook that he had passed out.
  • Michael J. Fox got a standing ovation from the audience when presenting the final award of the night, Best Comedy Series.
  • Ron Howard, who played Andy Griffith's son on The Andy Griffith Show, honored his late TV father and presented the "In Memoriam" package.
  • Ricky Gervais joked about whether the Emmys or Golden Globes (which he hosted) were better. He also took a shot at Louis C.K. for winning so many awards.
  • Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon tackled Jon Stewart as he was going up on stage to accept his umpteenth award -- which he won over them.
  • There was a fake "Memoriam" to Jimmy Kimmel, because he said that some people deserve to be honored while they're still alive. Josh Groban sang "That's What Makes You Beautiful" as the clips played.
  • A pre-taped sketch featured the actress who plays Lily on Modern Family acting like a diva on set and annoying all of her older co-stars with her attitude.
  • Melissa McCarthy was making sexual remarks about the nominees in the category she was presenting.
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus pretended to have switched speeches with Amy Poehler when they hugged following her win for best actress.
  • The opening sketch featured Girls star Lena Dunham naked, eating cake on a toilet when other nominees burst in on her.
  • Seth MacFarlane presented at the wrong microphone when he came on stage. He was eventually informed and moved to the correct one, where people could hear him.
  • Tom Hanks accepted the Outstanding TV Movie award for Game Change -- sporting a mustache.
