Boston Red Sox radio announcer Will Flemming apologized Monday for saying a Red Sox pitcher should “drill” a New York Yankees batter during Sunday’s 16-1 loss in the Bronx.
Flemming, WEEI’s play-by-play voice, made the remarks in the eighth inning with the Yankees ahead by a wide margin. After Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm stole two bases with a six-run lead, Flemming called him a “bush-league” player and later said, “Wouldn’t you sort of like to see [Jovani] Morán drill [Austin] Wells right here?”
When Wells homered, Flemming added that Morán “should fight Chisholm” and that Chisholm “plays the game the wrong way.”
On X, where he had not posted since December 2025, Flemming wrote that he was receiving “nonstop calls and threats” and that his comments “crossed a line.”

Chisholm leads the American League with 40 stolen bases. The first steal came after Boston chose not to hold him on first. Analyst Will Middlebrooks tried to keep the call on the action as Flemming’s frustration spilled over.
The loss dropped the Red Sox four games behind New York for the first wild-card spot and gave the Yankees the season-series tiebreaker. Flemming had also spent several innings criticizing a fifth-inning no-catch ruling on Ceddanne Rafaela that stood after replay, asking if officials in the replay center “had [their heads] on straight.”
Flemming has been in the Red Sox radio booth since 2019 and became the lead voice after Joe Castiglione retired following the 2024 season. The Boston Globe reports he declined comment by text Monday morning. A message to Red Sox broadcasting executive Colin Burch was not immediately returned.
