Tensions escalated Monday between California officials and the Trump administration over immigration raids, as the federal government announced the deployment of 700 Marines to Los Angeles. Local police, meanwhile, struggled to manage several days of unrest in downtown Los Angeles.

The La Times reports California officials have stated that federal assistance is unnecessary and is exacerbating tensions. The unrest follows days of intense but localized clashes between protesters and authorities, sparked by high-profile immigration arrests.

Late Sunday into early Monday, vandalism and burglaries targeted businesses in downtown Los Angeles and the Civic Center. The unrest included the burning of Waymo vehicles, attacks on police cruisers with rocks and electric scooters, and widespread vandalism. Though confined to a few blocks, the events have garnered global attention, particularly after President Trump deployed the National Guard to the city.
