CNN Correspondent Briefly 'Detained' Covering LA Protest

CNN's Jason Carroll 'detained'

On Monday, June 9, 2025, while reporting on protests in Los Angeles and the authorities’ heavy-handed response, CNN national correspondent Jason Carroll was briefly detained by the LAPD during a live broadcast, with no clear justification provided.

During the live coverage, Carroll was heard identifying himself to officers while standing with his hands behind his back. An officer eventually stated, “We’re releasing you. You cannot return. If you do, you will be arrested.”

This action appears to contravene California law, specifically a 2022 statute that safeguards journalists’ rights to cover protests, even in areas restricted by police.

Carroll later recounted, “I approached the officer, explained who I was, and showed my credentials. He asked me to turn around. I complied, placing my hands behind my back. They didn’t use zip ties, but they held both my hands as they escorted me aside, saying I was being detained while they removed me from the area and that I wasn’t allowed to stay.”

Carroll noted he asked, “Am I under arrest?” to which the officers responded, “No, you’re not being arrested, you’re being detained.”
