WEEI 93.7 FM’s 'vacvationing' morning man John Dennis is scheduled to return to the airwaves Monday, but The Boston Herald is reporting the longtime sports talker actually quit his gig two weeks ago because he has had it with one of his on-air partner Kirk Minihane.
Entercom Boston boss Phil Zachary Monday that “Dino is happily enjoying his vacation” and that he is “scheduled to be back next week.”
But, the Herald reports station sources say Dennis has made it clear he will not return and all that’s left to
negotiate is the terms of his departure.
As for the ongoing negotiations, the station source said, “It is something that will probably percolate quickly, or it will get ugly really fast.”
Word is, Zachary would like Dennis to say he took “early retirement” — his contract still has another year on it — and that he would return to do special events like the annual Jimmy Fund Telethon.
Dennis reportedly is willing to go that route — if Entercom makes it worth his while.
Relations among the three have been deteriorating for more than a year. While Gerry Callahan and Minihane get along, Dennis has complained on the air that the two have frozen him out. Minihane — who Forbes called “the most acerbic man in sports talk” — in particular gets under Dennis’ skin.
According to The Herald, ’EEI’s rivals at 98.5 The Sports Hub are watching the drama carefully, because if things go south they can use the morning show chaos in their pitches to advertising clients.
