Country music legend Vince Gill recently revealed he once nearly came to blows with radio shock jock Don Imus during a heated on-air confrontation, after Imus made disparaging remarks about Gill's wife, singer Amy Grant.
Gill recounted the incident on the "Naked Lunch" podcast, explaining that he and Imus had been good friends before Gill married Grant. Imus, who previously praised Gill (along with singer Delbert McClinton as favorites), reportedly "flipped" after the marriage and began mocking Gill daily on his morning show, eventually targeting Grant with unkind comments.
Gill appeared as a guest on Imus's program and waited for the moment Grant's name came up. When Imus said something negative about her, Gill confronted him directly:

"I’ve been hearing you say some pretty ugly things about my wife, and I’m just kind of curious why." He pointed out that Imus had never even met Grant, adding, "Well, if you ever met her, you'd never say an unkind word about her."
Gill then laid it on the line: "I’m going to shoot you straight. I really only came on this show for one reason. We’re either going to talk this out, straighten this out, or I’m going to crawl across this desk, and I’m going to kick your a–."
Imus's eyes reportedly widened at the threat.
The tension de-escalated as Imus suggested they "figure this thing out," leading to an on-air resolution. Imus apologized, and the two restored their friendship, which lasted until Imus's death.
The story highlights Gill's fierce protectiveness over Grant, whom he describes as universally beloved: "Everybody that meets her is crazy about her." The couple, married since 2000, have long been a prominent duo in music circles.
