USA Today Names New Top Editor

USA Today has appointed Jamie Stockwell as its vice president of news, the third leader in the top editorial role in three years. She starts March 30, 2026.

Stockwell, most recently deputy managing editor of news at The Washington Post—where she was laid off amid major staff cuts—will report to Senior Vice President Monica Richardson. Unlike the traditional "editor in chief" title, the position uses "vice president of news" as the outlet modernizes its approach.

She succeeds Caren Bohan, who left abruptly in December 2025 after just over a year, and Terence Samuel, who departed suddenly in July 2024 after about a year in the role.

Despite the recent turnover, Stockwell views the job as a major opportunity. She highlights USA Today's "extraordinary reach" and its unique position bridging national and local journalism through its network of more than 200 newspapers (including The Arizona Republic, Detroit Free Press, and The Indianapolis Star).

"It just feels so uniquely positioned to take the pulse of America and bring those insights into the national conversation," Stockwell said.

Her goals include making readers feel more connected to USA Today as an essential source for understanding national events, while positioning the newsroom to lead industry innovation and experimentation in reader service. This involves engaging audiences across evolving technology and media landscapes.

Richardson praised Stockwell's qualifications in a statement: "Her experience building high-performing teams at a local and national level, driving transformation and producing high-impact storytelling with her candid leadership style will be instrumental as we accelerate USA Today’s evolution and solidify our role as America’s essential, facts-forward news source."

Stockwell previously held senior editing roles at The Washington Post (including executive local editor), The New York Times, and other outlets, with a track record in ambitious journalism, digital innovation, and audience-focused leadership.
