Stephen A Smith Honored as Personality of The Year

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith received the inaugural Broadcasters Foundation of America "Broadcast Personality of the Year Award" on Monday night , during the organization's annual fundraising gala at the iconic Plaza Hotel in New York City.

The new award recognizes Smith's outsized influence and impact as a broadcaster across television, radio, journalism, and commentary. Known for his candid, headline-generating style on ESPN's First Take, his SiriusXM show Straight Shooter, and beyond, Smith was selected as the first honoree for his commanding presence and work ethic in the industry.

BFOA President Tim McCarthy praised the choice, stating, “We are excited to introduce the Broadcast Personality of the Year Award and there is no one better to be our first honoree than Stephen.”

In accepting the honor, Smith highlighted the foundation's mission, saying: "For the purposes of the BFOA, and what its main agenda and the goal is, there are people that are in the financial and otherwise, and anything that we can do to contribute to giving a helping hand to them is something we should not hesitate to do."

The Broadcasters Foundation of America, established for decades, provides critical financial assistance to radio and television broadcast professionals facing extended recovery from medical issues, accidents, natural disasters, or other hardships. The annual gala serves as a key fundraiser, with grants having grown significantly in recent years to support those in need within the broadcasting community.
