R.I.P.: Actor George Wendt, Everyone Knew His Name

On The Right: George Wendt (1948-2025)

George Wendt, best known for his role as the affable, beer-loving Norm Peterson on the iconic sitcom “Cheers,” passed away on Tuesday at his home in Studio City, California. He was 76. His manager, Geoff Cheddy, confirmed the death but did not disclose the cause.

Over a career spanning more than 40 years, Wendt amassed around 170 film and TV credits, but his portrayal of Norm on all 11 seasons of “Cheers” (1982–1993) defined his legacy. The role earned him six consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, starting in 1984.

A Chicago native, Wendt began his career humbly, sweeping floors at the renowned Second City comedy club, a launchpad for stars like John Belushi and Tina Fey. With no prior acting experience, he joined Second City’s workshops and performed with their resident and touring companies from the mid-1970s to 1980. “Something just clicked,” he recalled in a 2013 interview with The Democrat and Chronicle.

Wendt’s everyman charm led him to Hollywood, where he landed small roles on shows like “Taxi” and “Alice” before becoming America’s beloved barfly on “Cheers.”

Norm Peterson was an unassuming character, defined by his laid-back attitude and love for beer. Yet, his relatable, regular-guy persona resonated deeply with “Cheers” fans, cementing Wendt’s place in TV history.

The "Cheers" cast shared heartfelt tributes following George Wendt's death at age 76 on Tuesday:
  • Ted Danson (Sam Malone): Danson expressed deep grief, stating, “I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us. I am sending all my love to Bernadette and the children. It is going to take me a long time to get used to this. I love you, Georgie.”
  • Rhea Perlman (Carla Tortelli): Perlman described Wendt as “the sweetest, kindest man I ever met,” noting, “It was impossible not to like him.” She recalled their on-screen dynamic, saying, “As Carla, I was often standing next to him, as Norm always took the same seat at the end of the bar, which made it easy to grab him and beat the crap out of him at least once a week. I loved doing it and he loved pretending it didn’t hurt. What a guy! I’ll miss him more than words can say.”
  • John Ratzenberger (Cliff Clavin): Ratzenberger shared he was “heartbroken,” reflecting on their 11 years on "Cheers": “We shared a stage, a lot of laughs, and a front-row seat to one of television’s most beloved friendships. George brought Norm to life with a subtle brilliance — the kind that made it look easy. That was his gift. He was a true craftsman — humble, hilarious, and full of heart.” He added, “What you saw on screen was exactly who he was off screen with impeccable comedic timing and a deep loyalty to those he loved. I’ll miss our conversations and the quiet moments of friendship that meant the most.”
  • Kelsey Grammer (Frasier Crane): Grammer kept his tribute brief, stating, “I believe mourning is a private matter. But I liked George a lot. He was beloved by millions.”
