Tyrone Johnson has a new gig..doing fill-in at WKXW NJ 101.5 FM.
He was abruptly fired at WPEN 97.5 The Fanatic in April 2025 after nearly nine years with the station. Johnson had been hosting The Best Show Ever? in the afternoon drive slot (2-6 p.m.) since 2022, following the departure of longtime host Mike Missanelli.
His exit came as part of ongoing cutbacks by Beasley Media Group, the station’s parent company, which had also seen other hosts like Hunter Brody and Jen Scordo laid off in prior years. Johnson announced his departure on social media, stating, “It was a good run. I regret nothing,” and later shared that he was aware his time was limited, having sensed the decision was made months earlier.
Johnson first on-air at NJ 101.5 was this past Friday filling in for regular midday host Judi Franco. Unlike his previous role, where he focused on sports talk, Johnson’s new position will lean toward general news and talk, as a noncompete clause in his Fanatic contract prevents him from discussing sports on competing stations for several months. Johnson expressed enthusiasm about returning to the air, writing on social media, “It will be nice to be back on air.”
Johnson’s departure from 97.5 The Fanatic was not contentious, and he urged fans to support his former colleagues, emphasizing that they were not responsible for the decision. He explained that management was upfront about moving in a “different direction” and noted he had been aware of potential changes since the previous summer.
The Fanatic rebranded its afternoon show as The Afternoon Show, with Ricky Bottalico and Connor Thomas taking over, while the station advertised for a new on-air host. Johnson’s new role at NJ 101.5 marks a shift from his sports radio roots, but his experience and familiarity with the Philadelphia market suggest he’ll remain a notable voice in media.
