Report: Expect Reboot For CBS Evening News

“CBS Evening News” is destined for fresh changes, with new headlines expected soon, reports Variety.

The storied newscast, once anchored by legends like Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather, underwent a major overhaul in January 2025 but is now slated for further adjustments. According to two sources familiar with CBS News, the program is a top priority for Tom Cibrowski, the recently appointed executive leading CBS News. His influence has grown following Monday’s announcement that his boss, Wendy McMahon, will depart the company.

The show has struggled since its January revamp, which introduced a dual-anchor format featuring John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois and shifted focus to enterprise and feature reporting over breaking news.

Viewership has plummeted, averaging 3.63 million viewers for the week of May 5, 2025, per Nielsen data, down from 4.89 million during Norah O’Donnell’s final week as anchor. In comparison, ABC’s “World News Tonight” drew 7.27 million viewers, and NBC’s “NBC Nightly News” attracted 5.64 million that same week.

Variety reports that Cibrowski is expected to act swiftly to stabilize the program’s audience, as it continues to lag behind its ABC and NBC competitors.
