NBCU Signals Streaming-First Strategy

At the NBCUniversal Upfront on last week Peacock emerged as the star, underscoring NBCU’s pivot to a streaming-first approach for the spring upfront sales season. The company spotlighted Peacock’s expanding role in scripted content, live sports, and major events, positioning it as a cornerstone of its portfolio.

NBCU unveiled five exclusive scripted shows for Peacock, including one comedy and four dramas, while emphasizing the streamer’s dominance in live sports. “Peacock was built on sports,” said Mark Marshall, chairman of NBCUniversal global advertising and partnerships.

He noted that Peacock will offer over 7,500 hours of sports content in the next year, outpacing competitors like AppleTV+, Hulu, Max, Netflix, Paramount+, and Prime Video combined. Key live events include “Sunday Night Football,” the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, NBA All-Star Weekend, the 2026 Winter Olympics from Milan, and Super Bowl LX, many of which will also air on NBC.

Peacock’s scripted lineup features:
  • The Paper: A single-camera workplace comedy set at a fictional Toledo, Ohio, newspaper, from “The Office” executive producer Greg Daniels. Billed as a spiritual successor to “The Office,” it stars Oscar Nunez, reprising a similar accountant role.
  • All Her Fault: A drama about a missing boy, starring Dakota Fanning, Michael Peña, and Sarah Snook.
  • The Miniature Wife: A drama featuring Elizabeth Banks as a wife accidentally miniaturized by her husband’s invention.
  • The ’Burbs: A drama about a couple moving into a quirky cul-de-sac where a neighbor might be a killer.
  • The Copenhagen Test: An espionage thriller centered on a hacked American intelligence officer.
NBCU celebrated the NBA’s return to NBC next fall under an 11-year deal, reminiscent of its 1990–2002 run during Michael Jordan’s heyday. Weekly NBA games will air Tuesdays starting in October and Sundays after the NFL season ends in February. Jordan appeared via video to announce his role as a “special contributor” to NBC Sports’ NBA coverage.
