The news left friends and the community reeling. "Nobody wants it to be real," said Jeff Rick, a long-time friend, in an interview with 5 On Your Side. McKenna lived near, where the incident occurred.
"We’re such close friends; he’s a little older than me," Rick reflected. "He was really good at giving advice. We had long walks and talks, going through break-ups and shake-ups together. His sense of humor was always spot-on."
McKenna was a familiar voice as a radio host on KFNS 590 The Fan and a frequent emcee for St. Louis nonprofit events. He also served as the brand ambassador for the St. Louis Hero Network, a nonprofit supporting local first responders and military families through its business marketplace. 590 The Fan (KFNS) was a St. Louis-based sports talk radio station that shut down at the end of June 2024.In a heartfelt Facebook post, the St. Louis Hero Network wrote, "Our hearts are broken. We’ll work to keep his light shining bright in this city. It’s hard to lose your Heroes, and Brian McKenna was just that to so many."
McKenna’s signature phrase, "Your vibe attracts your tribe," became a recurring theme in tributes.
