Oscars Removing 8 Awards To Boost TV Ratings

People tuning into the Oscars next month will see significantly fewer awards being given, a streamlining of the Academy Awards broadcast in an effort to boost ratings that have continued to fall.

The president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said in a letter to members Tuesday that eight of the 23 awards, the ones for film editing, production design, sound, makeup and hairstyling, music (original score) and the three short film awards (documentary, live-action and animated), will be presented at the March 27th ceremony in the hour before the ABC broadcast begins.

The presentation of those awards and the winners' speeches will be edited and featured during the following three-hour live show.

The letter said the Oscars needed to, quote, "increase viewer engagement and keep the show vital, kinetic, and relevant."

In another previously-announced change this year, the favorite movie as voted by fans on Twitter will be recognized, and after several years of Oscar broadcasts without hosts, there will be three of them this year: Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes.
