Report: NBC Sat On Trump Story For Days

NBC News was aware of video footage of Donald Trump making lewd and disparaging remarks about women for nearly four days, a network executive said Saturday, but held onto the recording until lawyers finished reviewing the material.

The network’s caution led to an awkward result: NBC News was scooped by The Washington Post, which took just five hours to vet and post its story. A tip from an individual led to The Post breaking one of the most consequential stories of the 2016 presidential campaign.

The disclosure of Trump’s unguarded comments, which were made while he was wearing a microphone for an interview on “Access Hollywood” in 2005.

NBC News first became aware of the footage late Monday after receiving notice from producers at “Access Hollywood,” a syndicated entertainment-news program owned by NBC. The program’s producers had combed their archives for interviews with Trump after reading an Associated Press account of crude remarks he had made about female contestants on “The Apprentice,” the NBC reality program that Trump had starred on for 14 seasons.

They found the 2005 segment, in which Trump and “Access Hollywood” co-host Billy Bush banter crudely about women while traveling to a studio taping.

By Tuesday morning, NBC News determined that the footage was newsworthy and began to prepare a story. The news division agreed to let “Access Hollywood” break the story first, given that it had shot and unearthed the tape, according to an NBC executive who agreed to give the network’s account on condition he not be named or quoted directly.

Although NBC and “Access” both recognized the newsworthiness of the tape and intended to air it, it first had to undergo a review by the company’s lawyers, the executive said. The executive was unaware of any specific legal issue raised by airing an 11-year-old recording of a presidential candidate who was apparently aware at the time that he was being recorded by a TV program.

News outlets often submit potentially sensitive stories to lawyers for review before publication or broadcast.

Indy Radio: Smulyan Again Extends Emmis Go-Private Deadline

Emmis Communications Corp. CEO Jeff Smulyan on Friday again extended his $4.10-per-share offer to take the radio company private for a third time.

In a letter to the special committee of the board of directors sent Friday, Smulyan moved the deadline from Friday to Oct. 14. The original deadline for the deal, unveiled Aug. 18, had been Sept. 16.

The Indy Business Journal reports the additional extension, announced after the close of trading Friday, might be a sign that Smulyan and the special committee are at odds over price.

Shareholders have become more skeptical the deal will close as talks have dragged on. The stock, which traded as high as $4.25 in late August, closed Friday at $3.98, down 3 cents on the day.

Some shareholders have said they think the $4.10-per-share offer—which represents a 25 percent premium to Emmis’ average closing price over the 90 days before the deal was announced—is too low.

This marks the third time Smulyan has proposed taking the company private in the last 10 years. A 2010 attempt was blocked at the 11th hour by a group dissident investors. Smulyan called off the 2006 deal after he couldn't reach terms with the board.

InsideRadio reports that during the company’s fiscal second quarter results call on Thursday, Smulyan said he has had “productive, professional” negotiations with the special committee evaluating the proposal, but that he did not have any update on a possible deal. Smulyan reiterated his position that his purchase offer is in the best financial interests of the company. “We believe it makes more sense for this company to be private, because of all of the costs and because of some of the other issues of being a public company of this size,” he said.

Ultimately, Smulyan said it is up to Emmis’ shareholders to decide the company’s future course. “We’ll negotiate in good faith with the special committee. If we reach an agreement, it will be up to shareholders. They’ll decide if they want liquidity and if they want the ability to cash out or they don’t,” Smulyan said.

Fox News Celebrates Anniversary With New Studio

Fox News Channel celebrated 20 years on the air Friday morning with a gathering at the channel's Manhattan headquarters in a new $30 million, state-of-the-art studio set to be revealed on Election Day.

Co-presidents Bill Shine and Jack Abernethy presided over the 10 a.m. gathering during which they obliquely acknowledged the reign of founding chairman Roger Ailes, who was ousted last July amid sexual harassment allegations.

"Today is about looking back at 20 news-packed years and then looking ahead to doing even more journalism," said Shine, according to people who attended the meeting. "We understand for the last few years there has been a lack of communication from the top; Jack and I are set to fix that.”

Abernethy stated that he and Shine are focused on a mandate to "innovate," noting the new studio as a step toward that goal and that FoxNews.com and the company's digital ventures would also be revamped. And he noted that the network's ratings "are higher than they have ever been."

Shine singled out Rupert Murdoch for his leadership amid the recent crisis. "Having Rupert, the founder of Fox News and our executive chairman, with us and running the company has been a wonderful experience," Shine said. "He loves this company and only wants it to continue to thrive."

Murdoch was in Los Angeles on Friday, but in a memo obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, he harkened to Fox News Channel's beginnings as an iconoclastic outpost founded in the spirit of challenging "the establishment."

Murdoch's full memo:
Colleagues,
20 years ago, we created and launched a news network determined to challenge the establishment and deliver fair and balanced news. Today, I look back at what we have accomplished and I couldn't be more proud. We have changed the face of television news and the industry at large.
Not only has FOX News been the number one rated cable news channel on television for nearly 15 years, but we routinely place atop basic cable, beating out stalwarts such as ESPN, USA, TBS and AMC. This is a feat that was unheard of just 20 years ago, yet has become commonplace today, thanks to the hard work, determination and creative thinking of everyone here.
For the past two decades, we've been charting new territory with both our journalism and opinion programming. FOX News innovations like the news crawl have now become industry standards and our recent initiatives like the FOX News Deck play a pivotal role in our ability to stay ahead of the competition during breaking news. We've also cultivated the best news and analysis teams in the business — a roster largely composed of both homegrown star journalists and opinion hosts, all of whom are immensely talented.
As we enter our third decade, FOX News is still continuing to achieve new milestones. This year we are on track to have our highest rated year ever, our own Chris Wallace will be the first FOX News anchor to moderate a presidential debate, and we are currently the most engaged news brand on social media.
The majority of our success, however, comes from our commitment to delivering the fair and balanced news coverage that our viewers have grown to trust and depend on. It has been tremendously inspiring to watch FOX News flourish these past 20 years, and I am beyond excited for the network to continue its dominance into our next decade.
Congratulations to the entire staff, and thank you for helping to build this great national institution.
Regards,
Rupert Murdoch

Fox Fight: Hannity-Kelly Make 'Nice-Nice'

Sean Hannity, Megyn Kelly
At the end of The Kelly File Thursday night, Fox News host Megyn Kelly tossed to Sean Hannity, adding “my friend.”

Afterwards, according to TV Newser, Kelly shared a photo on Twitter of herself and Hannity together, smiling, with the caption “we’re Irish. It’s complicated” and the hashtag #friends. Hannity followed with his own version of the very same tweet.

The smiles come after a day of widespread attention to what appeared to be a rift inside Fox News, after Kelly mentioned Hannity in a segment on Donald Trump Wednesday night—saying Trump avoids tough interviews in favor of the “safe” surroundings of Hannity’s show.

Hannity took to Twitter to respond, accusing Kelly of backing Hillary Clinton. “Clearly you support her,” Hannity said, raising the issue of bias for one of Fox News’ star political journalists—co-anchor of election night coverage and, earlier this year, moderator of Fox-hosted GOP debates.

Was it a corporate mandate to make up? Hannity says no:

October 10 Radio History

In 1900...actress Helen Hayes was born Helen Brown in Washington DC. After honing her craft on the stage Ms. Hayes began a 55 year big screen career in 1931. She had her own popular radio anthology series in the 1940′s; on  TV she played one of the Snoop Sisters in the 70′s, and Miss Jane Marple in the 80′s.

The First Lady of the American Theater died Mar 17, 1993 at age 92

Orville Gibson, Undated
In 1902...Kalamazoo, MI, mandolin maker Orville Gibson founds the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co, Ltd. In 1936 it would create the first commercially successful electric guitar.

Gibson began in 1894 in his home workshop in Kalamazoo, Michigan. With no formal training, Gibson created an entirely new style of mandolin and guitar, with tops carved and arched like the top of a violin. His creations were so different that he was granted a patent on his design.  More importantly, they were louder and more durable than contemporary fretted instruments, and musicians soon demanded more than he was able to build in his one-man shop.

On the strength of Gibson's ideas, five Kalamazoo businessmen formed the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co., Ltd., in 1902. Within a short period after the company was started, the board passed a motion that "Orville H. Gibson be paid only for the actual time he works for the Company." After that time, there is no clear indication whether he worked there full-time, or as a consultant. Julius Bellson states in his 1973 publication, The Gibson Story, that "Orville Gibson had visions and dreams that were considered eccentric."

Starting in 1908, Gibson was paid a salary of $500 by Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing Co., Limited (equivalent to $20,000 a year in modern terms). He had a number of stays in hospitals between 1907 and 1911. In 1916, he was again hospitalized, and died on August 19, 1918, at 62 years of age, in St. Lawrence State Hospital in Ogdensburg, New York.  Gibson is buried at Morningside Cemetery in Malone, New York

In 1911...radio performer Zeke Manners was born in San Francisco.  While most of his radio work was at local stations in LA & New York, for a time he had a 15-minute network show that allowed him to integrate ‘hillbilly’ recordings with his live accordion, piano & banjo playing…”The One-Man Variety Show.”

He died Oct 14 2000, four days after his 89th birthday.

In 1932..."Betty & Bob" premiered on radio.

Betty and Bob was the first widely popular daytime serial soap opera created by the powerhouse producer-couple Anne and Frank Hummert in 1932.  The show was similar to their future soap opera creations featuring a poor simple girl who marries a rich distinguished man.  Betty is Bob's secretary and the two fall in love despite the disapproval of Bob's family.

Betty and Bob love created drama all around them including family problems, loss of money, murder, death of the young Bob jr., and bouts of amnesia and insanity.  Poor Bob was sent to a mental institution on more than one episode.  Originally starring Elizabeth Reller and Don Ameche as Betty and Bob, the cast underwent a number of changes.

In 1932...a syndicated adventure series for juveniles, Chandu the Magician was heard for the first time on KHJ radio Los Angeles.  It would continue with varying casts in various formats and networks until 1950.

In 1937...the Mutual Broadcasting System debuted Thirty Minutes in Hollywood. 48 sponsors shared the cost of the program that aired in 72 cities across the US. It was the first Mutual co-op radio show. George Jessel and Norma Talmadge starred, with music by the Tommy Tucker Orchestra.

In 1959...We all have career choices to make.  On this date, Ken Brown decided to leave the Quarrymen, leaving John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison to fend for themselves. (Don't worry about them; they were going to be fine...)  The group had played at the popular Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool, England in a show that Brown was unable to perform due to a heavy cold.  McCartney felt that Brown should not get a share of the performance fee since he did not perform.  Lennon and Harrison sided with McCartney and so Brown quit the group.

In 1962...the BBC radio service banned the Halloween novelty song “Monster Mash”by Bobby “Boris” Pickett. Neither obscene nor controversial, “Monster Mash,” like many other songs, was banned under a catch-all regulation prohibiting the broadcast of anything deemed “offensive.”

In 1970...The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) head, Nicholas Johnson, responded to recent comments made by Vice President Spiro Agnew that attacked radio stations for playing songs that contained "drug culture propaganda... (in) too many of the lyrics the message of the drug culture is purveyed," saying, "If we really want to do something about drugs, let's do something about life... The song writers are trying to help us understand our plight and deal with it. It's about the only leadership we're getting. They're not really urging you to adopt a heroin distribution program, Mr. Vice President."   In 1973…U.S. Vice President Spiro Agnew pled no contest to income tax evasion, then resigned.

In 1970...The hot 100...1970:  Neil Diamond sipped his way to #1 with "Cracklin' Rosie" but the Jackson 5 were hot in pursuit with "I'll Be There".  "Candida" moved to #3 for Dawn while the previous #1 from Diana Ross--"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" came in fourth.  Newcomer Free was up from 10 to 5 with "All Right Now".  The rest of the Top 10:  "Julie, Do Ya Love Me" by Bobby Sherman, CCR's double sided "Lookin' Out My Back Door"/"Long As I Can See the Light", Sugarloaf had their song "Green-Eyed Lady" in the Top 10, the Carpenters moved from 18-9 with "We've Only Just Begun" and Rare Earth was at 10 with "(I Know) I'm Losing You".

In 1970...The Album Charts..1970:  CCR set the pace on the Album chart for the eighth straight week with Cosmo's Factory.  Mad Dogs & Englishmen by Joe Cocker was second with the Moody Blues making a healthy move (7-3) for their album A Question of Balance.  The "Woodstock" Soundtrack dropped to 4 and the Third Album from the Jackson 5 catapulted from 12 to 5.

The rest of the Top 10:  Tommy from the Who, Chicago II, Abraxas debuted at #8 for Santana, After the Gold Rush by Neil Young and James Taylor first hit it big with the album Sweet Baby James.

In 1985...actor & director Orson Welles suffered a fatal heart attack at age 70.  Besides his movie work, Welles was a star of bigtime radio; his Mercury Players produced The War of the Worlds in 1938, and dozens of other hour-long dramas.  His other hit radio series included The Shadow, Campbell Playhouse, The Lives of Harry Lime, and The Black Museum.

In 1998…Announcer (WNYC-New York starting in 1937, Arthur Godfrey's radio and TV shows for nearly 14 years starting in 1945)/commercial spokesman (Chesterfield cigarettes, the original Kellogg's Tony the Tiger)/radio newsman (Mutual Broadcasting System in the 1960s) Tony Marvin died at age 86.

In 2003...conservative talk-show host, Rush Limbaugh, admitted to his audience of 20 million listeners that he was addicted to painkillers and would be entering rehab for 30 days.
