Report: 3Q Radio Ad Spending Drops 6.2 Percent

Total advertising expenditures increased 0.3 percent in the third quarter of 2014 to $33.7 billion, according to data released today by Kantar Media.

During the first nine months of 2014 ad spending grew 2.2 percent. “After a relatively robust first half when spend grew by 3.1%,the pace of ad spending slowed during Q3 and a principal cause was Top 100 marketers becoming more restrained with their budgets,” said Jon Swallen, Chief Research Officer at Kantar Media North America.

“In contrast, mid-sized advertisers, who are the core of the ad market, continued to supply foundational support and grew their total spending by 6-7 percent during the quarter.”

Measured Ad Spending By Media Television ad spending increased 6.5 percent in the third quarter and was the only sector in the analysis with year-over-year growth. Spanish Language TV rose 23.7 percent and was fueled by the final two weeks of the World Cup tournament in July.

Spending on Cable TV networks was up 7.9 percent in the period with roughly one-third of the gain attributable to increased commercial time. Political spending was the primary contributor to the 5.2 percent rise in Spot TV.

Collectively, these three TV segments were responsible for an estimated $700 million of growth and offset the weaker results from Network TV (+0.2 percent) and National Syndication (+1.6 percent). Q3 Internet display spending fell 1.7 percent due to fewer page views by desktop PC users, which in turn led to fewer ad impressions. (Mobile internet display spend is not included in this analysis.)

Outdoor expenditures declined 2.7 percent on cutbacks from the Restaurant, Financial Service and Media categories. Print media experienced further losses in the period. Total expenditures in Newspaper media fell 13.0 percent and reflected commensurate reductions in volume of space sold.

Consumer Magazine spending dropped 4.6 percent as lower budgets from CPG and Auto advertisers erased encouraging gains from the Apparel and Pharmaceutical categories. Ad expenditures in Sunday Magazines fell 11.7 percent on lower demand from Direct Response marketers, a bellwether category for the segment.  (Note that these figures are based on print channels only and do not include activity on websites or other properties operated by print brands).

Radio media also dipped during the third quarter. Local Radio ad spending on English language stations was down 6.2 percent and on Spanish language stations it fell 6.6 percent. National Spot Radio fared no better with a decline of 5.3 percent. A common outcome for each of these segments was lower spending by retail, financial service and restaurant advertisers.

NYC Radio: Mister Cee Surfaces On Radio 103-9 FM

Mister Cee
Less than a month after leaving WQHT 97.1 FM Hot 97,  NYC radio personality DJ Mister Cee is back on the air, spinning strictly classic rap and R&B throwbacks on Saturday afternoon for Cumulus' WNBM 103.9 FM /Radio 103.9, according to the NY Times.

M-C has learned the station used Mister Cee as a mixer as part of its HipHop Holiday weekend. He has not been hired as an employee, but he provided the Radio 103-9 FM with two 15-minute mixes.

While Hot 97 has always been known as a masculine, aggressive station, Mister Cee tells The Times, Radio 103.9 targets an older, more female audience whose members came of age during his prime hip-hop years.

At Hot 97, Mister Cee (born Calvin Lebrun), once the DJ for Big Daddy Kane and the executive producer of the Notorious B.I.G.’s debut album, “was the glue between the old and the new,” said Chris Green, the head of national radio promotions for Capitol Music Group, who has known the DJ since the mid-’90s. But Mister Cee always knew he would eventually “make the transition to urban adult radio,” Mr. Green added.

Ken Johnson, the program director for Radio 103.9, said New York is the rare radio market where DJ’s are still local celebrities and personalities. “Mister Cee is all about the people,” he said. “His experience with the people who listen to the music is invaluable.”

“His personal life is his personal life,” Mr. Johnson added.

In September 2013, however, it was more than that. Mister Cee first resigned from Hot 97 amid much-publicized incidents, including three arrests, of soliciting oral sex from transgender prostitutes, a taboo in an industry that has long wrestled with homophobic impulses.

Tom Brokaw Says Cancer Is In Remission

Tom Brokaw
"A year ago my future was more uncertain than I cared to acknowledge but now I face the New Year with very encouraging news," Brokaw, who anchored "NBC Nightly News" from 1982 to 2004, wrote Sunday in a note to NBC News staff.

He said that he will soon begin a drug regimen to keep the cancer in remission. Brokaw, 74, revealed in February that he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer that attacks bone marrow.

Brokaw, who remains an NBC News special correspondent, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November. Last week, he took part in the sing-along finale of "The Colbert Report."

R.I.P.: Iconic Nashville Broadcaster Teddy Bart

Teddy Bart
Teddy Bart, a radio and TV broadcaster known for shows that often defined the discussion of Nashville's political and business heavyweights, has died.

He was 78-years-of-age according to The Tennessean.

"Teddy Bart was an institution," said attorney John Jay Hooker, a frequent guest on his shows. "He was a very talented man."

Mr. Bart was the personality on several shows during his career, including long-running hits such as the "Waking Crew" on WSM-AM radio, the "Noon Show" and "Teddy Bart's Nashville" on WSM-TV, and "Teddy Bart's Round Table" with co-host Karlen Evins on a number of radio stations. He was also a news anchor for WKRN-TV.

"It was like Johnny Carson asking you to be on his show," said David Ewing, a lawyer and Nashville historian who was on "Round Table" several times. Local politicans and business leaders tuned into the show, and guests would often have messages waiting for them when they got back to work after an appearance, Ewing said.

The shows tackled local news and issues with lively yet civil debate.

"It was one those those shows where people didn't yell or shout at each other," Ewing said. "There's not a show on radio today like it."

Mr. Bart's legacy in Nashville loomed large in the broadcast community even after he retired, and he was inducted into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame in May.
