Boston Globe Reorganizes Newsroom

Boston Globe Editor Brian McGrory announced a wide-ranging newsroom reorganization in a staff memo Thursday, creating a new digital publication hub and making about 10 personnel changes aimed at giving the website greater authority and making it “less dense and more thoughtfully packaged.”

McGrory said the site is the paper’s “most widely read platform” and that the current structure gives too little opportunity for homepage editors and producers to shape coverage in real time. “This is not to suggest that print isn’t important. It is, but there are exactly no prospects for increasing our print readership,” he wrote. The overhaul seeks a more intentional approach to what, how, and when stories publish online, with better planning, more creative headlines and alerts, stronger visual design, and longer commitment to stories on the homepage.

Key elements include a senior “head programmer” role overseeing the site hour by hour, supported by a live news editor and an enterprise editor. Two senior storytelling editors will work across departments to elevate top work and coordinate with the programming team. Visual departments (design, video, and photography) will each dedicate an editor to the hub.
