MI Radio: Two Stations Forced Off Air For Not Paying Lease

Classic Rock WGHN 92.1 FM Grand Haven and Christian WMPA 93.1 FM Ferrysburg had leased space for its transmitter on a city of Grand Haven communications tower. But five months after being warned of contract breaches, its transmissions were terminated, according to a letter sent to MLive by Grand Haven City Manager Ashley Latsch.  According to the City Manager the stations were not paying their bills.

The unpaid fines were related to WGHN failing to ensure 75% of its programming was locally originated, according to Latsch’s timeline.

Other violations included placing additional antennae and/or cameras on the tower without the city’s consent and assigning an interest under the lease to a third party without the city’s consent, according to Latsch.

According to Tieman, WGHN had leased space on the city’s tower since 1984. The station is now working to get FCC approval for a different tower location, he said.

WGHN programming can be heard at 1370 AM, 94.9 FM and at wghn.com.
