Stolen Pets Reports Seem to Be Bogus

The Springfield, Ohio Police Division said Monday morning they have received no reports related to pets being stolen and eaten.

A social media post originally from a Springfield Facebook group went viral nationally in recent days. The original poster did not cite first-hand knowledge of an incident. Instead they claimed that their neighbor’s daughter’s friend had lost her cat and found it hanging from a branch at a Haitian neighbor’s home being carved up to be eaten.

The poster also claimed “Rangers” and police told them that “they have been doing it” at Snyder Park, too, with ducks and geese.

The Sprinfield News-Sun reports police said they were aware of the social media post but that this was “not something that’s on our radar right now.” The post received tens of thousands of impressions.

In a case that some were confusing with Springfield, police in Canton, Ohio, 175 miles northeast of Springfield, recently charged a woman with cruelty to companion animals for allegedly killing and eating a cat in a neighborhood in front of multiple people, according to USA Today.

Radio History: Sep 10

➦In 1920
...KNX Los Angeles began broadcasting as 6ADZ. Although KNX received its first formal broadcasting station license on December 8, 1921, the station has traditionally dated its founding to September 10, 1920, starting with broadcasts conducted by Fred Christian over his amateur station, 6ADZ. Christian was a former shipboard radio operator, who later explained that he began the broadcasts in order to provide something to listen to by customers who had constructed receivers from parts purchased at the store. Christian began making broadcasts with a five-watt vacuum-tube transmitter, operating on the standard amateur wavelength of 200 meters (1500 kHz).

KNX - 1925

Initially there were no specific standards in the United States for radio stations making transmissions intended for the general public, and numerous stations under various classifications made entertainment broadcasts. However, effective December 1, 1921, the Department of Commerce, regulators of radio at this time, adopted a regulation that formally created a broadcasting station category, and stations were now required to hold a Limited Commercial license authorizing operation on wavelengths of 360 meters for "entertainment" broadcasts or 485 meters for "market and weather reports" (833 and 619 kHz). By the end of 1922 over 500 stations would be authorized nationwide.

On December 8, 1921, the Electric Lighting Supply Company was issued a broadcasting station license with the randomly assigned call letters KGC, authorizing operation on the 360 meter entertainment wavelength. The station's location was listed as Fred Christian's Harold Way home. The shared 360 meter wavelength required times-haring agreements between an increasing number of stations needing exclusive time periods. On May 4th the Los Angeles Times reported that a total of seven local stations were slated to make broadcasts that day, comprising a schedule that ran from noon to 9:00 p.m., with KGC assigned 2:00-2:30 and 7:30-8:00 p.m.

KNX Request Line Operator

On May 4, 1922, the Electric Lighting Supply Company was issued a broadcasting license for a station with the randomly assigned call letters of KNX, also on 360 meters.  This was technically considered to be a second station in addition to KGC, however, after KGC was formally deleted on June 20, 1922, the Department of Commerce concluded that KGC and KNX were functionally the same station, and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) records list December 8, 1921 as KNX's "date first licensed".

The new authorization coincided with preparations for a move to the California Theater, with Fred Christian continuing as station manager. On June 12, 1922 the Los Angeles Times reported that "After more than two months of preparation, the new broadcast station at the California Theater had its opening program Saturday evening at 9:15, sending out a wavelength of 510 meters [588 kHz].

Bob Crane - 1960
KNX's power was raised to 100 watts in early August 1922. In the fall of 1924, Guy Earl, Jr., owner of the Los Angeles Evening Express, arranged for the newspaper's purchase of KNX. The Express made significant upgrades, including increasing the power to 500 watts, and began broadcasting from the Paul G. Hoffman Studebaker building in Hollywood. KNX was one of the last stations to have stayed on the original 360 meter wavelength, and the newspaper engineered a move to 890 kHz. It remained on this frequency until November 11, 1928, when the station was reassigned to 1050 kHz, under the provisions of a major reallocation resulting from the Federal Radio Commission's (FRC) General Order 40.

In early 1928 KNX changed owners and was then operated by the Western Broadcast Company. In 1929 the station's transmitter power was upgraded from 500 to 5,000 watts, followed by an increase to 10,000 watts in 1932. In 1933, the station moved its studios to another part of Hollywood, after being granted permission by the FRC on June 7, 1932, to raise its output to 25,000 watts. The following year, KNX's transmitting power was raised to the nationwide maximum of 50,000 watts, which the station continues presently.

CBS purchased KNX in 1936 and began operating it as its West Coast flagship, which ended CBS's eight-year affiliation with KHJ. In 1938, the CBS Columbia Square studios were dedicated for KNX as well as West Coast operations for the entire CBS radio network. That October, the station carried Orson Welles' celebrated version of The War of the Worlds. In March 1941 the station was shifted to 1070 AM as part of the North American Regional Broadcasting Agreement assignments, where it has been ever since.

In 2009, KNX adopted the slogan "All news, all the time." It was previously used for 40 years by KFWB, KNX's historic rival in the news radio wars before both became sister stations through the 1995 merger of Westinghouse Electric (KFWB's owner) and CBS. KFWB's format change to news-talk in September 2009 (and currently as a Regional Mexican station) now leaves KNX the only all-news outlet in the Los Angeles area, which is now emphasized in its alternate slogan, "Southern California's only 24-hour local news & traffic station".

On February 2, 2017, CBS agreed to merge CBS Radio with Entercom (now Audacy). The merger was approved on November 9, 2017 and consummated 8 days later.

➦In 1933…Early radio entertainer Jimmy Durante first appeared Eddie Cantor's "Chase and Sanborn Hour" with Eddie Cantor.

➦In 1935…The radio program "Popeye, the Sailor," debuted on NBC Red Network as a 15 minute, three-times-a-week feature. But instead of spinach giving him strength (as in the comics and cartoons), it was the sponsor’s breakfast cereal Wheatena. “Wheatena’s me diet / I ax ya to try it / I’m Popeye the Sailor Man”.

➦In 1945...KLS 1310 AM changed its call letters to KWBR and changed its format to focus on an African-American audience. In 1959, it was bought by the owners of Memphis radio station WDIA, and the call letters were changed to KDIA. During the 1960s through the 1980s, the station was the premier soul and funk station in the San Francisco Bay Area. The station helped launch the careers of such musicians as Sly and the Family Stone. Its tagline at that time was "KDIA, Lucky 13."

CMA Broadcast Awards winners will be determined by a Final Round of judging this month.

The 58th annual CMA Awards airs live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. CT on ABC and next day on Hulu. Tickets go on sale on this Friday (Sept. 13) starting at 10 a.m. CT.

Morgan Wallen Leads 2024 CMA Awards Nominations

Morgan Wallen is the leading nominee for the 2024 CMA Awards, as determined by eligible voting members of the Country Music Association. He received seven nods. Cody Johnson and Chris Stapleton follow with five nods each, while Post Malone and Lainey Wilson each nabbed four. Louis Bell, Luke Combs, Charlie Handsome, Hoskins, Jelly Roll, Megan Moroney and Kacey Musgraves each secured three nominations.

Wallen hasn’t won at the CMAs since he was crowned new artist of the year four years ago. Less than three months after that breakthrough moment, he was caught on video using a racial slur, an incident which almost certainly cost him some major awards.

Billboard reports Stapleton received his eighth nod for entertainer of the year, an award he has yet to win. (He has amassed more nods without a win in that category than any other artist in CMA history.) Also nominated are Combs (his fifth nod in the category), Wallen (his third), Wilson (her second) and Jelly Roll (his first).

The eligibility period for the 2024 CMA Awards is July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024. That means such high-profile albums as Zach Bryan’s The Great American Bar Scene, Wilson’s Whirlwind and Post Malone’s F-1 Trillion won’t be eligible until next year.

CT.

🎵COMPLETE LIST OF NOMINEES:  Here

The nominees for new artist of the year are Moroney, Shaboozey, Nate Smith, Mitchell Tenpenny, Zach Top and Bailey Zimmerman. Moroney was also nominated in the category last year. Zimmerman was nominated two years ago. (CMA rules allow artists to be nominated in this category twice).

Shaboozey is the fifth Black artist to be nominated in this category (or the horizon award, as the award was known from its inception in 1981 through 2007). Music legend Ray Charles was nominated in 1985 when he made a country market breakthrough, followed by Darius Rucker (2009) and Jimmie Allen and Mickey Guyton (both 2021). Rucker and Allen both won.

Miranda Lambert failed to receive a nod for female vocalist of the year, breaking a 17-year streak of nominations in that category. Carly Pearce broke a three-year string of nods in that category. Midland wasn’t nominated for vocal group of the year, breaking a six-year streak. (The Red Clay Strays took that spot.) Carrie Underwood wasn’t nominated for entertainer of the year, breaking a five-year streak of nods in that category. (Jelly Roll took that spot.)

The nominations in two key categories – male vocalist of the year and vocal duo of the year – were exactly the same as last year.

Winners of the 58th Annual CMA Awards will be determined in a final round of voting by eligible voting CMA members. The third and final ballot will be emailed to CMA professional members on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Voting for the CMA Awards final ballot ends Tuesday, Oct. 29 (6:00 p.m. CT).

The Harris-Trump Debate Could Set An Audience Record

The presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, scheduled for Tuesday, could be the most watched debate to date.

ABC News will host the debate with David Muir and Linsey Davis as moderators. For Donald Trump this will be his seventh presidential debate (including last June’s debate with Joe Biden) more than any other candidate. For Kamala Harris it will be the first.

There are a number of reasons a record audience could happen, according to Forbes.

A renewed interest in the election with Kamala Harris replacing Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee. Historically, the first presidential debate is the most watched. The possibility this could be the only debate between Harris and Trump. Also, three of the four most watched debates involved Donald Trump. Furthermore, the opportunity to stream the debate on a number of platforms and devices (both measured and unmeasured). The lone 2020 vice- presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence is the second most watched debate to date.

ABC News Releases Rules for 2024 Presidential Debate

ABC News has released the debate rules for “Kamala Harris and Donald Trump – ABC News Presidential Debate” on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 9:00 p.m. EDT, which will air live on ABC and stream live on the 24/7 streaming network ABC News Live, Disney+ and Hulu, and is available for simulcast.

The debate will take place at the National Constitution Center (525 Arch St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19106). “World News Tonight” anchor and managing editor David Muir and “World News Tonight” Sunday anchor and ABC News Live “Prime” anchor Linsey Davis will serve as moderators.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have qualified for the debate under the established criteria, and both have accepted the following debate rules, which include the following:

New Poll Suggests Harris’ Support Has Stalled

The first major poll after Vice President Kamala Harris' lone sit-down interview has shown a "reversion back toward Mr. Trump," as Donald Trump leads The New York Times/Siena College poll going into Tuesday's lone debate.

Trump's lead nationally among likely voters is just 1 point (48%-47%), within the margin of error, but even the Times noted Trump's "support remains remarkably resilient" despite positive media buzz after Harris taking the Democrat crown from President Joe Biden and the Democratic National Convention.

Notably, Democrats historically have an edge in support in national polls due to the large strangleholds on registered voters in the largest blue states of California and New York that do not impact the Electoral College but can skew the popular vote and a national poll.

"Whatever the explanation, the Times/Siena poll would be one of the first opportunities to pick up a reversion back toward Mr. Trump," according to The New York Times poll analysis.

  • Among the other strengths Trump showed in the poll, according to Times' analysis:
  • Trump is more favorable now than he was when he was elected in 2016 and the incumbent in 2020.
  • Trump has a 5-point lead on Harris on whichever the most important issue was to a voter. Pollsters asked a two-part question: 1. What's the most important issue; 2. Is Harris or Trump better on it.
  • Trump "occupies the center." While a near majority say Trump is neither "too far" from the middle, a nearly majority says Harris is too far to the left.

The Times/Siena College poll of 1,695 voters nationwide was conducted Sept. 3-6, and the margin of error is plus or minus 2.8 percentage points, according to Newsmax.

Murdoch Family Feud Headed To Court Battle

Rupert Murdoch, the 93-year-old billionaire press baron, reportedly wants to alter the terms of an irrevocable trust so that his eldest son, Lachlan, inherits his throne and keeps control of prized assets such as Fox News and The Wall Street Journal. But three of the mogul’s other children — James, Elisabeth and Prudence — are pushing back, insisting that all four siblings continue to receive equal voting shares.

The family feud goes before a judge at the Washoe County Courthouse in Reno, Nevada, next week, but the proceedings and case filings are shrouded in secrecy. Alicia L. Lerud, an administrator at the Second Judicial District Court, confirmed to NBC News that the Murdoch matter is under seal and “confidential pursuant to court order.” (Reno probate court frequently deals with family trusts and estates.)

In late July, however, The New York Times published an article based on a copy of a sealed court document laying out some of the case’s key issues. NBC News has not independently seen the document or confirmed its authenticity. Gary A. Bornstein, the litigator representing the three siblings, and Adam Streisand, the lawyer representing their father, did not respond to requests for comment from NBC News.

Murdoch is one of the most powerful and influential media titans of the modern age. He built a small Australian newspaper business into a mighty collection of broadcast and cable television properties. The crown jewel remains Fox News, a pillar of the American conservative movement and home to high-profile opinion hosts who staunchly defend former President Donald Trump.

The palace intrigue inside the Murdoch family has often lent itself to breathless public fascination, inspiring the HBO series “Succession” and behind-the-scenes books.

The family is divided partly by differences in political opinion — and how those beliefs could shape the future of its sprawling media empire. Lachlan Murdoch, who took over as chairman of Fox Corp. and News Corp. last September, tends to be more aligned with his father’s conservative worldview.

DirecTV Takes Disney Beef to FCC

Satellite TV provider DirecTV has filed a complaint with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, accusing Walt Disney of failing to negotiate in good faith and engaging in anticompetitive behavior, the company said on Sunday.

In the complaint, DirecTV said Disney has imposed unreasonable conditions on the renewal of their distribution agreement, including demands for bundling and penetration requirements that a federal court recently ruled unlawful.

CNBC reports DirecTV also said that Disney has insisted on a “fat bundle” of channels, forcing the carrier to offer less popular programming while Disney provides consumers with cheaper, “skinnier” packages.

A Disney spokesperson, in response, said the company continues to negotiate with DirecTV and urged it to finalize a deal that would prioritize customers.

The dispute has already resulted in over 11 million DirecTV subscribers losing access to Disney-owned channels, including ESPN, ahead of the National Football League season.

The standoff comes amid a broader debate over the future of bundled programming in the streaming era, with DirecTV seeking to offer more flexible, lower-cost packages without ESPN, while Disney argues for protecting its flagship networks.

Amazon Nears Deal to Stream Bally Sports Content

Amazon reportedly is close to complete a long-expected expansion in its regional sports streaming efforts.

The online retail and streaming giant is close to an agreement with bankrupt Diamond Sports Group to stream most of the Bally Sports parent company’s content, according to a report in the New York Post. Fans could pay almost $20 per month to Amazon to gain access to regional teams. The pact has been expected since early this year, and more so in recent weeks—even after Amazon dropped out of a prior agreement to provide DSG with $115 million post-exit financing to aid its emergence from bankruptcy.

The agreement, at least at the outset, will involve 27 teams from the NBA, NHL, and MLB for which DSG has digital rights. DSG also airs games for seven other MLB teams, at least for the 2024 season, only on a linear basis as digital rights have been seen as a particularly thorny “gating issue” for some of those clubs.

The deal could further accelerate cord cutting, sources noted, although Bally will continue to broadcast the games across cable networks nationwide.   Financial terms of the Amazon deal currently under discussion couldn’t immediately be learned. A source said it is not exclusive, allowing Diamond to further expand its reach by signing deals with other platforms including YouTube.

Diamond, which has been in Chapter 11 since March 2023, is hoping that the Amazon streaming pact, along with other deals approved by a judge on Wednesday with the NBA and NHL for the new season, will be enough to persuade the court to allow it to emerge from bankruptcy in November, sources said.

Apple Event: iPhone 16 Expected to Be Highlight

Apple excited fans with its vision for its “Apple Intelligence” artificial intelligence system earlier this year. Now, it’s time for the company to prove it really works, reports CNN.

The company is set to introduce the first lineup of iPhones purpose-built for generative artificial intelligence (which lets users create text and images) during its annual hardware event, which kicks off Monday at 1 p.m. ET. You can watch the livestream here.

The event was teased with the cryptic motto of “it’s glow time,” and Apple is staying mum thus far on what it means.

Apple faces immense pressure ahead of the event to prove the new AI features and other iPhone 16 updates are worth shelling out for an upgrade. Apple also needs to convince investors that it hasn’t fallen behind in the AI arms race, as rivals have already released similar features with the new technology.

Since the launch of the iPhone 12 with 5G connectivity in 2020, the company has given users few exciting reasons to buy the latest generation. Phone cameras have largely advanced to the point where they’re sufficient for most people’s day-to-day needs without major hardware changes, and at some point the human eye isn’t even capable of perceiving higher screen resolutions.

As a result, iPhone sales, which make up half of the company’s revenue, have been sluggish.

Support For A U-S TikTok Ban Continues To Decline

As public support for a TikTok ban continues to decline, many U.S. adults are skeptical or unsure such a ban will happen, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted July 15-Aug. 4, 2024.

A line chart showing that support for a TikTok ban has declined to 32% among U.S. adults.

The share of Americans who support the U.S. government banning TikTok now stands at 32%. That’s down from 38% in fall 2023 and 50% in March 2023.

Meanwhile, 28% of Americans oppose a ban, up from 22% in March 2023. And the share who say they are uncertain whether the government should ban the platform has risen from 28% in March 2023 to 39% now.

These findings come as TikTok’s fate in the United States continues to be uncertain. President Joe Biden signed a bill in April that requires ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, to sell it or face a ban in the U.S. Challenges to this law are now headed to the courts.

Even amid the decline in support for banning TikTok, views remain divided by political party.

Line charts showing that support for a TikTok ban continues to fall in both parties, but Republicans remain more likely to back this than Democrats.

Republicans and Republican-leaning independents are far more likely than Democrats and Democratic leaners to support a ban (42% vs. 24%).

Still, support for a ban has dropped substantially within each party. In March 2023, 60% of Republicans and 43% of Democrats said they supported the government banning TikTok.

Tom Brady Makes Broadcast Debut For FOX Sports

Future Hall of Famer Tom Brady officially started his second act as FOX Sports' lead color commentator alongside play-by-play partner Kevin Burkhardt on Sunday, which ultimately overshadowed the Dallas Cowboys' 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland. But like a rookie quarterback making his league debut, Brady's first official game in the booth came under review.

"You're a broadcaster! How about that," Burkhardt said after introducing his partner, who needed no introduction.

Brady responded with a smile: “We’re here. It’s been quite a journey. I’m excited to be your partner.”

USAToday reports Brady's performance drew mixed reviews from social media users as his nerves were on display early. He had a couple hiccups with his rhythm and his delivery was choppy at times, in addition to several moments of dead air space that are normally filled with commentary.

"Tom Brady is clearly quite nervous in his NFL broadcasting debut. Kinda funny to remind yourself that the greatest quarterback to ever do it is still a human being at the end of the day," one X user wrote online.

Brady appeared to find his stride and got more comfortable in the booth as the game progressed. His commentary grew more insightful and engaging, even reminding viewers that he's "still a rookie in here," but many NFL fans pointed out there is much room for improvement for Brady.

FOX Sports first announced in May 2022 that Brady was set to join the network's lead broadcasting team. The announcement was made ahead of Brady's final season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after he announced his decision to un-retire after 40 days in March 2022. Brady retired from playing "for good" in February 2023 and took a gap year during the 2023-24 NFL season. He's set to call Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans on Feb. 9, 2025.

Kendrick Lamar To Headline Super Bowl Halftime Show

Kenrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar will headline the 2025 Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, set to take place Feb. 9, 2025 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The set will be the second time the hip-hop superstar will grace the stage at the NFL’s main event, after he was a special guest alongside Dr. Dre’s West Coast hip-hop showcase in 2022. But this will be the first time he headlines the big show, and just the second time a rapper is the main event. Lamar nodded to that in a statement announcing the news.

“Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date,” he said. “And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.”

This has been a big year for Lamar, despite him not having released an album since May 2022’s Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers. In the spring, he contributed a guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s Hot 100 No. 1 single “Like That,” which served as the springboard for a high-profile rap beef with Drake.

That kicked off an extended back and forth, in which the two hip-hop titans traded diss tracks in what was the most engrossing back and forth in the genre in years, and ultimately culminated in Lamar’s anthemic “Not Like Us,” which not only served to end the beef but also became a monster hit, topping the Hot 100 for two nonconsecutive weeks and racking up 765 million on-demand U.S. streams since its May 4 release.

The Super Bowl Halftime Show will be shown live on Fox from the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans that Sunday. It will also be the sixth year that the show will be programmed by Roc Nation, which is executive producing the show alongside Jesse Collins, produced by DPS and directed by Hamish Hamilton. Roc Nation partnered with the NFL in 2019 in a deal that saw the JAY-Z-led company take over entertainment programming and social justice initiatives on behalf of the league. That ultimately included Roc’s oversight of the Halftime Show, one of the highest-profile stages in world entertainment, beginning with the 2020 edition.

Magnum Media is currently comprised of 22 Wisconsin stations on 35 signals stretching from the shores of Lake Michigan to the shores of the Mississippi River.

R.I.P.: Herbie Flowers, Acclaimed Bass Guitarist

Acclaimed session musician Herbie Flowers died September 5. He was 86.

A talented player of the bass guitar, Flowers’ played on more than “500 hit recordings” before the 1970s ended.

As a studio musician in London in the 60s and 70s he got to know and contribute to the music of Elton John, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Mark Bolin, Cat Stevens, Harry Nilsson, Al Kooper, Melanie and many other popular musicians,” the post continued. “He was also a member of T Rex, Blue Mink and Sky. Herbie’s most well-known contribution was likely the iconic bass line for Lou Reed’s ‘Walk on the Wildside.” Not many of us get our own entry in Wikipedia did.

In 1973 English singer David Essex released "Rock On" as a single and it rapidly became an international hit. The distinctive stripped‑back musical arrangement was devised by producer Jeff Wayne. According to Wayne, only three session musicians played on the final backing track, and the most prominently featured was Flowers, whose double‑tracked bass guitar was treated with a prominent "slapback" delay effect, creating a complex polyrhythmic backbeat.

➦In 1908...Early radio actor, announcer Ed Prentiss born (Died at age 83 – March 18, 1992). He was perhaps best known for portraying the title role on the radio version of Captain Midnight. He was announcer on another kid’s radio favorite, Jack Armstrong the All-American Boy.

He was also the narrator for a number of daily hour of NBC radio soap operas.

➦In 1926... the National Broadcasting Company was created by RCA, the Radio Corporation of America.

NBC is the oldest major broadcast network in the United States. In 1986, control of NBC passed to General Electric (GE), with GE's $6.4 billion purchase of RCA. GE had previously owned RCA and NBC until 1930, when it had been forced to sell the company as a result of antitrust charges.

After the 1986 acquisition, the chief executive of NBC was Bob Wright, who remained in that position until his retirement. He was succeeded by Jeff Zucker. The TV network is currently part of the media company NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast, which formerly operated NBCUniversal in a joint venture with General Electric from 2011 to 2013 (and before that, jointly owned by GE and Vivendi). As a result of the merger, Zucker left NBC and was replaced by Comcast executive Steve Burke.

The radio network officially launched Nov. 15, 1926.  On January 1, 1927, NBC formally divided its programming into two networks, called the Red and the Blue. Legend has it that the color designations originated from the push-pins early engineers used to mark affiliates of WEAF (red pins) and WJZ (blue pins), or from the use of double-ended red and blue colored pencils.

The two NBC networks did not have distinct identities or "formats", and, beginning in 1929, they shared use of the distinctive three-note "NBC chimes". The NBC Red Network, with WEAF as its flagship station and a stronger line-up of affiliated stations, often carried the more popular, "big budget" sponsored programs. The Blue Network and WJZ carried a somewhat smaller line-up of often lower-powered stations and sold air time to advertisers at a lower cost. NBC Blue often carried newer, untried programs (which, if successful, often moved "up" to the Red Network), lower cost programs and unsponsored or "sustaining" programs (which were often news, cultural and educational programs). In many cities in addition to New York, the two NBC affiliated stations (Red and Blue) were operated as duopolies, having the same owners and sharing the same staff and facilities.

On April 5, 1927 NBC reached the West Coast with the launching of the NBC Orange Network, which rebroadcast Red Network programming to the Pacific states and had as its flagship station KGO in San Francisco. NBC Red then extended its reach into the Midwest by acquiring two 50,000–watt clear-channel signals, Cleveland station WTAM on October 16, 1930 and Chicago station WMAQ (coincidentally, a CBS Radio Network charter affiliate) by 1931. On October 18, 1931, Blue Network programming was introduced along the NBC Gold Network, which broadcast from San Francisco's KPO. In 1936 the Orange Network name was dropped and affiliate stations became part of the Red Network. The Gold Network adopted the Blue Network name.

In a major move in 1931, RCA signed crucial leases with the new Rockefeller Center management that resulted in it becoming the lead tenant of what was to become in 1933 its corporate headquarters, the RCA Building, at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Under the terms of the lease arrangement, this included studios for NBC and theaters for the RCA-owned RKO Pictures. The deal was arranged through the Center's founder and financier, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., with the chairman of GE, Owen D. Young, and the president of RCA, David Sarnoff.

In 1987 NBC sold its remaining radio network operations to Westwood One, which continued using NBC identification for some of its programming until 2014. Beginning in 2016, NBC Radio News has been distributed in conjunction with iHeartMedia.
