R.I.P.: David Moulton, SW FLA Radio Host

David Moulton w/Troy Aikman

David Moulton, the longtime spotter who served as Troy Aikman’s right-hand man in the broadcast booth, died Saturday at 59 after a six-year battle with stage four renal cell cancer, according to his wife, Julie. Aikman paid tribute to him Sunday in an emotional Instagram post.

Moulton, a veteran Southwest Florida sports radio host, worked as a spotter for Aikman and Joe Buck at Fox Sports. Aikman said the relationship began in 2018 and grew well beyond the booth.

“What started as a professional relationship became a friendship I have cherished,” Aikman wrote. “David was loyal, dependable and a warrior until the very end. He deserved better. My heart breaks for his family and all who loved him.”

He added, “I’m grateful for the years we shared and will miss him deeply. Rest in peace big guy.”

Aikman, who has been linked to possible departure from ESPN’s Monday Night Football amid stalled contract talks, called Moulton his “right-hand man in the broadcast booth.”

A spotter is a quiet but essential role in a broadcast booth, identifying players, tracking substitutions, and feeding real-time information to the announcers so the on-air team can keep pace with the action.

Moulton was widely regarded as a well-respected figure in sports media whose behind-the-scenes work and personal loyalty left a lasting impact on those who worked with him, particularly Aikman.
