Miami Radio: WMEN Fires Dan Sileo Over Player Bounty

Sports talk radio host Dan Sileo has been fired by WMEN 640-AM Monday after the former Miami Hurricane tweeted over the weekend that he was placing a $1,000 bounty on Florida State defensive lineman Timmy Jernigan, according to Sun-Sentinel.

Sileo tweeted that he would pay $1,000 to any Miami player that "TAKES THIS KID OUT" while attaching a photo of Jernigan using his hands to create "The U".

Sileo deleted the tweet, and claimed that he was only joking, but WMEN terminated his contract with the station Monday.

The firing is Sileo's second this year and third in the past 20 months.

Sileo was fired from WQAM 560 AM in March after he made headlines for tweeting sexist comments at Fox Sports broadcaster Erin Andrews, among other on-air and Twitter meltdowns.    Sileo was fired from Tampa's WDAE 620 AM in March 2012 after he called three black NFL free agents "monkeys."

WMEN sent out a statement Monday afternoon:

"As a result of Dan Sileo's action on his personal twitter account on November 3, 2013, 640 WMEN has terminated his independent contractor relationship with the station.  The ownership, staff and management of WMEN-640 do not condone his actions which have no place in sports."

Sportstalker Dan Sileo, who has a history of making controversial statements, stepped into it again this past weekend.

Sileo, who hosts10a-1p on WMEN 640 AM in Miami, sent out a shocking message to the on his personal Twitter account Sunday, posting a picture of Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan holding up the “U” symbol and stating he would pay $1,000 to any Miami “PLAYER to TAKES THIS KID OUT.”

The original Tweet has been taken down and Sileo has since posted he was joking.

The station responded to Sileo’s bounty by saying it was “just as shocked and stunned as everyone else by this tweet,” according to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press. The station’s executive producer, Marc Eisenberg, said the station is "still looking into the situation."

Radio sports talker Dan Sileo is scheduled to join South Florida’s WMEN 640 AM Sports starting Tuesdayas the station’s new 10am-noon host.

It’s another chance for Sileo, who was most recently PM Drive host at Sports/Talk WQAM 560 AM Miami.   He landed at WQAM begin dismissed at WDAE 620 AM Tampa for remarks Clear Channel management ruled racially offensive.

However, he lost the WQAM gig back in March, posting on Twitter at the time that he’d been “fired for speaking my mind, baby!”

Sileo will be following Sid Rosenberg, who hosts mornings on the James Crystal-owned outlet. Ironically, Sileo replaced Rosenberg in afternoons when he joined WQAM after that station had sacked Sid following a DUI arrest.

Phoenix Radio: Dan Sileo Lasts 4-Days At KGME

iHeartMedia's Fox Sports KGME 910 AM has already parted company with sports talker Dan Sileo.

Sileo began his 4-7 p.m. show on Tuesday but by Friday night, his Twitter account was scrubbed and his show no longer was listed on Fox Sports 910’s website, according to theathletic.com.

Fox Sports 910 announced Sileo’s hiring on its website on Aug. 29. Shortly after the announcement, The Athletic published a story noting that Sileo had been fired three times by Florida radio stations in an 18-month span from 2012-13 for racist or sexist comments on air or on his personal Twitter account.

The Athletic reached out multiple times to Fox Sports 910 program director Aaron Trimmer for comment, but Trimmer’s only response was an e-mail in which he wrote, “I got your request. I will be back in touch.”

Apparently, Sileo’s hiring did not sit well with the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes, who recently signed a contract to move their games to KGME for the upcoming season, were not happy with the hiring of Sileo. The club issued a statement:

"When we became aware that Fox Sports 910 had hired Dan Sileo, we immediately reached out to the station’s management to express our deep concern regarding Mr. Sileo’s abhorrent comments. Our promotion of inclusivity is deeply rooted into the fabric of who we are as an organization and we have no tolerance for racism, sexism, anti-Semitism or any other discriminatory behavior.'

XEPRS 1090 AM, better known as The Mighty 1090, has announced veteran sports talker Dan Sileo has joined the station.

Sileo starts morning 6a to 9a Monday.

Sileo began his his sport media career in 1994 with the One-On-One Sports Network. The former pro football player counts stops at KGO and KNBR in SF, WQTM and WFLF in Orlando, WDAE in Tampa and WQAM Miami.

Sileo replaces longtime soports radio veteran Lee 'Hacksaw' Hamilton will be remain with the Mighty 1090 in a new capacity to announced in the next few weeks.

San Diego Radio: Dan Sileo May Be Headed To Entercom

According to a MLB Padres spokesperson, the team has been “assured” that its radio content for the upcoming season will not involve controversial sports-talk host Dan Sileo, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Sileo recently left The Mighty 1090 and, according to people familiar with the situation, likely will join Entercom, the Padres’ radio partner. The possibility exists that Sileo, in a yet-to-be-announced capacity, and Padres games will be carried on the same station. Entercom operates several stations in San Diego. They include Alternative KBZT 94.9 FM, the Padres’ home last season, and KEGY Energy 97.3, a potential destination for 2018.

Both sides have considered a change in format. Bob Bolinger, vice president/market manager of Entercom San Diego, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

The Padres do not have input on Entercom hires, and Sileo will not be a club employee. Per their agreement, Entercom also supplies the personnel and format for pre- and post-game shows. The Padres determine in-game staffing. Radio broadcasters Ted Leitner, Jesse Agler and Tony Gwynn Jr. are expected to return in 2018.

Speculation about Sileo’s next job has heightened, even as Sileo has increased his activity on social media. On Thursday, Sileo joined the masses reacting to reports that President Donald Trump slurred immigrants from certain countries, tweeting:

Sileo, who has a history of controversial statements, faced allegations of racism, sexism and anti-Semitism in prior workplaces. Between 2012 and 2013, he was fired by three Florida radio stations, once for remarks he made on air and twice for things he tweeted. He landed with The Mighty 1090, the Padres’ former flagship station, in early 2014.

Sileo hosted The Mighty 1090’s morning-drive show until last month.

San Diego Radio: The Fan's Dan Sileo Goes Coastal

Nothing official from Entercom, but it sounds like sports talker Dan Sileo has gone coastal.

Sileo is currently hosting mornings on Entercom's KWFN 97.3 The Fan in San Diego and for the past several weekends he has been pulling weekend shifts at Entercom WEEI 93.7 FM in Boston.



Sileo is a former UMiami Football All-American who had a short NFL career as a defensive lineman, playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and appearing in preseason games for the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys.

His previous stints include KGO, KNBR and the Ticket 1050 in San Francisco, WDAE in Tampa, WQTM and WFLF in Orlando and WQAM in Miami.

Sileo was hired by San Diego's "The Mighty" 1090 AM (XEPRS-AM) in February 2014 to do a morning drive time show.  In January 2018, Sileo exited The Mighty 1090 AM for middays on Entercom's ill-fated 97.3 FM "The Machine". One month later, Entercom re-branded the station 97.3 FM "the Fan", and Sileo moved to morning drive 5am-9am.

Broadcast Company of the Americas has announced that they have extended their agreement with Mighty 1090 XPRS-AM morning drive host, Dan Sileo, through December 2017.

Sileo joined the Mighty 1090 lineup in February 2014 and since then has quadrupled AM drive ratings, making a significant impact at the station.

In addition to Dan’s morning show responsibilities, he also has been part of the San Diego Padres Pregame Show for the 2015 baseball season.

Miami Radio: Sports WQAM Fires Dan Sileo

The WQAM 560 AM sports talk host Dan Sileo, who began his stint in South Florida last April, has been fired.

Sileo's rant following Miami's September loss to Kansas State went viral on YouTube and extinguished most favor with the Miami fan base. WQAM is the Miami Hurricanes Radio Network's flagship station.

“We parted ways with him and we wish him well,’’ program director Jorge Sedano told The Miami Herald, adding that Kevin Rogers and Brandon Guzio will temporarily fill that slot until a permanent replacement is found.

John “The Freak” Renshaw, a Saturday host on WQAM and occasional weekday fill-in, is believed to be a front-runner to replace Sileo in the 10am to 1pm slot.

Sileo was suspended for two days in January after posting on Twitter a series of sexist insults about Fox broadcaster Erin Andrews, including, “Love Erin Andrews either naked or in a porn. Not at a sports desk.”

Sileo came to WQAM after leaving Tampa's WDAE-AM last March. Sileo resigned after he called three black NFL free agents "monkeys."

San Diego Radio: Morning Host Dan Sileo OUT At KWFN

Morning talk host Dan Sileo is no longer host of the morning show at Entercom's KWFN 97.3 FM.

However, Sileo will remain in the Entercom stable. That was confirmed Entercom Communications executive Bob Bolinger, senior vice president and market manager, on Tuesday night. He declined further comment.

John Kentera is listed as the morning host on the station’s website. He is expected to host Wednesday’s show between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. Kentera hosted a show at 690-AM and 1090-AM from 1990 through 2015.

The Padres signed a five-year deal with Entercom that began with the 2017 season. A switch within the broadcast company, from 94.9 to 97.3, came at the start of 2018 spring training.

Last spring, Sileo moved from a midday slot to the early morning show after the host originally hired for that time period, Kevin Klein, was replaced following a controversy that erupted over a tweet many deemed insensitive to suicide.

Sileo, who worked at The Mighty 1090-AM from 2014-17.  According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, many Padres fans on social media were outraged last week when the club announced it would make members of its front office and field staff available for weekly interviews on Sileo's show.

Recently, Sileo began hosting a weekend show on Entercom's WEEI 93.7 FM in Boston. the WEEI Show continues.

San Diego Radio: Sports Talker Dan Sileo EXITS The Mighty 1090

Morning host Dan Sileo has announced via Facebook that he’s leaving XEPRS The Mighty 1090 AM in San Diego. He indicated that he's leaving for a new unannounced opportunity.

According to sportsradiopd.com, Sileo had been with the radio station since February 2014 after spending the majority of his career in Florida working in Tampa for WDAE, in Miami for WQAM and in Orlando for 740 The Team and NewsRadio 540 WFLA. Sileo also spent a few years earlier in his career in San Francisco with KNBR 680 and 1050 and FOX Sports Radio.

In a video posted on Sileo’s page he thanked the Mighty 1090 for providing his career a boost a few years ago after going thru a difficult period in Miami at WQAM.


He said a new opportunity had been presented which he couldn’t turn down and out of respect for his new employer he’s unable to share his future plans. He did though say that an upcoming announcement would be made soon and that the new job would be in San Diego. Sileo also added that he signed a 3-year deal with the new station and the plan is for the new brand to be built around his show.

Kevin Klein Tweet outraged people because it made light of suicide with the word “JUMP” paired with a picture of the Coronado bridge.

When this all started, the Padres let it be known they were not happy with their new flagship radio station.

It didn't take long for the MLB Padres to issue a statement from Executive Chairman Ron Fowler and General Partner Peter Seidler:

“We find the comments made last night by Entercom’s employee offensive, insensitive and completely unacceptable. Mental illness and suicide are not joking matters. Additionally, we’ve expressed our concerns to Entercom around the tone and direction of the station they have chosen to create.

“It’s important for our fans to know that our agreement with Entercom to move to 97.3 was an opportunity to expand our pre and postgame coverage and it was done well before we knew the format, the tone or the talent lineup.

“We believe Entercom owes San Diego an apology. And, even though we do not have ultimate control over Entercom’s programming beyond our game broadcasts, we apologize for the behavior of the station.”

It was also reports the Padres were demanding that 97.3 change their programming to to more “family friendly” content.

Sileo was hired by San Diego's The Mighty 1090 AM (XEPRS-AM) in February 2014 for mornings.

In 2017, he was named #20 on Jason Barrett's Top 20 Morning Sports Radio Shows in America. Sileo named to the 2017 Talker's TOP 100 Sports Talk Radio shows in America in at #31. Sileo in 2018 of January would leave "The Mighty 1090 AM" morning drive show for crosstown Entercom's 97.3 FM "The Machine" from 10am-2pm doing general talk radio.

When The Machine was launched in March, the new format promised to engage and entertain San Diego’s audience with a unique mix of compelling personalities, comedy, sports and curated classic rock music.

Miami Radio: Sileo Suspended For Erin Andrews Tweets

Sports talker Dan Sileo will be benched for two days following what Beasley Broadcastings calls ‘inappropriate” Tweets about Fox Sports’ Erin Andrews.

Sileo’s show airs 10a-1p on WQAM Miami.

Sileo referred to Andrews as a bimbo in one and in another remarked her stalker being the best things that could have happened to her career.
Andrews was sideline reporter for yesterday’s Fox Sports broadcast of the Atlanta Falcons-San Francisco 49’ers NFC Championship game, won by the Niners, 28-24.

Sileo, not known to be subtle, got himself in trouble last year at Clear Channel's  WDAE 620 AM Sports Animal for calling Vincent Jackson, Cortland Finnegan and Jonathan Vilma of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers "monkeys" while discussing the upcoming free agency period in the NFL.  The team also pulled his credentials at the time.

Sileo is expected to be off-air today and Tuesday.

San Diego Radio: KEGY Rebrands As 97.3 The Fan

Entercom Communications Wednesday announced plans to relaunch KEGY 97.3 FM as 97.3 THE FAN, San Diego’s only 24/7, all-sports FM station.

97.3 THE FAN will serve as the flagship home for the San Diego Padres and will broadcast all regular season games, expanded pre and post-game shows and complementary programming throughout the week. The new format will launched today at 5 a.m. PT.

“After a recent off-air tweet, we took the opportunity to step back, listen to the important feedback from the community and our partners, the Padres, and reevaluate the path forward,” said Bob Bolinger, SVP and Market Manager, Entercom San Diego.

“The station was always going to be largely about sports and we determined the right thing to do was to go 100% all-in. We look forward to building 97.3 THE FAN into San Diego’s best sports station, delivering the highest quality content and listening experience for the people of this great community.”

The new line-up will be headlined by engaging and compelling personalities, including Dan Sileo on the air from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. PT, Jim Rome from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. PT and Doug Gottlieb from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. PT, and market veteran Chris Ello with Tony Gwynn Jr. from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. PT.  97.3 THE FAN will also be the new home to the NFL and the NCAA in San Diego, beginning with the 2018-19 season. A controversial social media post on March 26 by a KEGY 97.3 The Machine morning show host Kevin Klein — who never ended up getting on the air — put the radio station at odds with the Padres just three days before the 2018 season opened.

Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler said the Padres were “very uncomfortable” with a format change he claimed never was discussed with the team.

The club “put them on notice,” Fowler added.

“Should this be the home of what we consider to be family entertainment, Padres baseball? That’s the question,” Fowler said then. “Based on what’s happened the last few weeks, this is almost shock-jock radio. Obviously, that’s not what we intended to be involved in.”

In a statement Wednesday, Fowler said, “We have had numerous discussions over the last two weeks with Entercom’s local and national management about our expectations for the radio home of the San Diego Padres. They have assured us that the challenges we faced with 97.3 FM at the beginning of this season have been addressed and that steps have been taken to make sure they are not repeated.

“We believe that their new format better reflects the values of the Padres and the San Diego community as a whole, and we appreciate Entercom’s willingness to listen to our concerns and adjust their content.”

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the MLB Padres did not allow employees to go on the station the past two weeks as they work to resolve the situation.  A Padres spokesperson now says “Based on the revised format, our meetings and assurances from 97.3 management, the team will be supplying personnel for interviews in the near future.”

With the format change, 97.3 The Fan joins The Mighty 1090-AM and XTRA 1360-AM to give San Diego three all-sports radio stations in what already was considered an oversaturated market segment. NIelsen ratings for February had 97.3 (before its March format change) and 1090 tied for 23rd place with a 1.6 rating among listeners 6 and older and 1360 tied for 28th with a 0.7 rating.

The Padres signed a five-year deal with Entercom that began with the 2017 season.

Entercom Friday announced the launch of KEGY 97.3 FM The Machine, Talk that Rocks, in San Diego.

The new station will engage and entertain San Diego’s audience with a unique mix of compelling personalities, comedy, sports and curated classic rock music. Listeners will also be able to tune in to broadcasts of the San Diego Padres’ spring training and regular season games.

“97.3 The Machine will offer San Diego listeners a one of a kind station that combines all of the elements they have been craving: captivating talent, comedy, rock and sports,” said Bob Bolinger, Senior Vice President and Market Manager, Entercom San Diego. “We’re excited to fill this void in San Diego and will continue to add even more compelling content to the station’s lineup to serve both listeners and local partners.”

The new 97.3 The Machine will feature the popular sports-themed program, “The Dan Sileo Show,” on weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Following that, the station will air the top syndicated program on Seattle’s KISW, “The Men’s Room,” from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

In the evenings, 97.3 The Machine will air all 162 regular season games of the San Diego Padres in addition to 12 of their spring training games. This year’s San Diego Padres broadcast will feature radio play-by-play announcers Ted Leitner and Jesse Agler, expanded pre and post-game shows and complimentary programming throughout the week.

Evenings and weekends when not broadcasting Padres baseball, 97.3 The Machine will provide music fans in San Diego with a true classic rock curated playlist ‘That Rocks,’ framed by entertaining comedy.

On March 29th, 97.3 The Machine will debut it’s morning show “Kevin Klein Live” from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Former Energy 97.3 morning co-host Sonic replacing Jeff Hamby on overnights at KBZT Alt 949, with former 97.3 midday host Alexia making the switch to Alt 949.

Miami Radio: WQAM Taps John Renshaw For Mid-Day

WQAM has hired its replacement for Dan Sileo, and the station stayed in-house in doing so.

John Renshaw, who has been hosting weekend shows at WQAM since August, has been moved into the weekday 10 a.m. slot, WQAM program director Jorge Sedano told the Sun-Sentinel Wednesday.

The John Renshaw Show will start Monday, following the Joe Rose Show. Alex Donno, who hosts the Miami Hurricanes in-studio game coverage, will be Renshaw's sidekick.

The 10 a.m. spot had been filled by Sileo before he was fired on March 4 after 11 controversial months at the station. The former Miami Hurricanes football player could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

Moonves: CBS Is a Content Video Company

CBS CEO Les Moonves spoke Friday with Morning Host Dan Sileo on the Mighty 1090 in San Diego.  Moonves re-iterated that CBS is now primarily a video content company and felt CBS Radio was "better-off" as part of Entercom.

He also told Sileo that the decision to spin-off CBS Radio was a tough call because of its legacy, however,  radio is a "slow growth" and video is the future for CBS.

San Diego Radio: Moonves Says CBS Is Moving On To Digital

Sport talker Dan Sileo took an opportunity Wednesday to Ask CBS Chairman/CEP Les Moonves about the future of CBS Radio.

On XEPRS 1090 AM, Sileo commented that "CBS was built on radio..dating back to the William Paley days. So why the transition away from radio?

Mooves replied, “As the world has progressed, and as we've moved into much more digital - and much more streaming, and it is a world for us that is keyed on video. Radio is still a wonderful, wonderful business. Our intent is to spin off radio so it is its own self-standing company, which will fit better than being part of a big conglomerate like ours, which is keyed more on television."

"By no means do we think radio's not a great business," Moonves continued, "it's a slower growth business than the video business is, but we have 117 radio stations and we think that will be a great standalone company. So by no means are we deserting the radio business"

Radio, according to Moonves, doesn’t fit with where the company is heading. “But we have 117 radio stations and we think that will be a great standalone company,” Moonves said. “As a standalone high-cash, relatively low-growth business, it will do really really well and it’ll do better as a standalone than part of the other divisions of CBS.”

He further commented, “Video is where CBS is heading, with CBS Television Network, and Showtime, and what we’re doing digitally. So radio became a different sort of business that really doesn’t fit with where we’re going.”

Moonves didn’t mention selling or swapping the radio group as possibilities, as he had during his bombshell announcement during a CBS Investor Day presentation one month ago in New York. Since then, the company has clarified that making the division its owned separate entity is the primary route being pursued. And while radio may not fit the company’s video-centric focus, Moonves hasn’t been shy about making appearances on the medium.

Miami: Sports Talk Radio Wars

As October lurks with the annual confluence of professional football, baseball, basketball, hockey and NCAA football, the radio media goes into hyper drive trying to score during the important November ratings sweeps. GamingToday.com takes  a look at this year’s radio sports talk wars in South Florida.

Ridiculous as it may seem, the four SoFlo counties with 8 million people have four full time sports talk radio stations. That’s three too many. Even in NYC, Philly, LA, DC, Minneapolis, Detroit or Dallas, only two all sports stations might survive.

And, that does not include the huge Hispanic language radio arena.

When WQAM 560, 790/104.3 WAXY “The Ticket,” 940 WINZ “The Sports Animal” and 640 WMEN, go head-to-head, advertisers are in a quandary about buying their male 25-54 demographic. Consequently, high profile talent on these stations look to provide any edge to attract Ford or Budweiser or Harley Davidson. All four sports station’s ratings added together fall short of the top rated FM music station.

Radio AM 560 has been at it for nearly three decades. Station 104.3 FM recently joined the fray by acquiring the programming of 790AM; Station 940AM carries the Miami Dolphins – king of the broadcast rights in the market, and WMEN appeals to the Palm Beach/Boca market due to a weak signal.

For 20 years 560 mega talents Neil Rogers, Hank Goldberg and Jim “Mad Dog” Mandich ruled the sports talk airwaves. In the last decade newcomer 790 put a dent in their ratings causing the 560 Beasley management to fire their high profile talents and their large salaries. Station 790, largely behind the edgy/broader approach of afternoon drive talent Dan Le Batard, assaulted the 560 and stole audience persistently.

 In late August AM 790 owner Lincoln Financial, shook up the market by moving its sports talk to FM 104.3. The move exposes their programming to triple the cherished demo audience of the AM band. Similar moves in other markets suggest this will catapult the station into a dominant ratings position.

Having the broadcast rights to the Florida Marlins and Miami HEAT can only add to the ratings. The remainder of the 790/104.3 programming features popular ESPN syndicated host Colin Cowherd midday and ex-ESPN anchor and Heat TV commentator Jason Jackson.

Answering back, WQAM 560 added veteran talent Jorge Sedano as afternoon drive host and program director. Formerly 790’s morning drive DJ, he also hosted late night nationally on Fox Sports Radio and is a television personality doing weekend sports. He also is a member of the Heat broadcast staff.

With Dolphins/TV personality Joe Rose, longtime host of the 560 morning drive the station remains competitive. 560 also carries the broadcast rights of the University of Miami – an eroding but loyal audience. The remainder of the programming includes long time ex-Tampa sports talk fav, UM Hurricanes and Dallas Cowboys player Dan Sileo middays, and a polished Kevin Rogers at night. The QAM weekend hosts are by far the best of the bunch. Mike Levine hosts a nightly hour of baseball-only programming during season – the only one of its kind and well done.

Clear Channel station 940 AM WINZ was the market’s longtime all news/talker. The station recently turned all sports and won the Miami Dolphins broadcast rights, which are extremely expensive and involve a complicated advertising agreement with the team. The games are also broadcast on FM 105.9, a sister station.
