Lionel Richie, 77, underwent a successful common procedure for atrial fibrillation (AFib) and is doing well, a representative confirmed Tuesday. He will take time off to recover and return to the stage soon.
“Lionel underwent a common procedure for Atrial fibrillation (AFib),” the statement to USA TODAY said. “The doctor said everything went perfectly. Lionel is doing great but will take some time off and will be back on stage soon.”
The update follows Richie’s Aug. 29 hospital visit in St. Louis after a Sing a Song All Night Long Tour date with Earth, Wind & Fire. He had discussed dehydration onstage, sat during the closing song “All Night Long (All Night),” and sipped electrolyte drinks.
Doctors advised rest at the time; he later joked about his “vitamin pill” kicking in so he could “dance on the ceiling.”Richie is next scheduled for a six-night residency at the Wynn Las Vegas’ Encore Theater on Oct. 14, 16 and 17, plus Nov. 11, 13 and 14.
