Study: Consumers Spend $164B Per Year on Cable, Internet

According to doxoINSIGHTS’ 2025 “Cable & Internet Market Size and Household Spend Report,” U.S. households spend $164 billion annually on cable and internet services, accounting for 4% of the $4.55 trillion in total yearly household bill payments.

The report, based on actual consumer payments across 97% of U.S. zip codes, shows that 73% of households pay a median of $121 monthly ($1,452 annually) for these services, equating to a median annual spend of $1,063 per household when adjusted for market share.

The analysis, derived from anonymized bill payment data, provides detailed insights into household spending, including monthly and annual costs by state and in cities with populations of 40,000 or more. Steve Shivers, Doxo’s CEO, noted that high-speed connectivity remains a critical household expense, driven by remote work, streaming, and smart home technology. He anticipates potential price increases due to tariffs on cable and broadband equipment, though competition from wireless broadband may mitigate some costs.
