DC Radio: WAMU, WTOP Disrupted When Man Climbs Tower

A man who climbed a 321-foot broadcast tower on the American University campus in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, triggering a three-day standoff with local police, has died, reportedly by suicide.

The tower, which supports WAMU 88.5 (NPR) and WTOP 103.5 (Hubbard Broadcasting), prompted a police response at 2:41 p.m. Tuesday, noting negotiators were addressing a barricaded situation at the 4400 block of Massachusetts Ave, NW.

Radio World reports WAMU, licensed to American University, reported a brief signal disruption and powered down the tower to aid emergency response, operating from a backup facility in Virginia. WTOP similarly used a Maryland backup site. Video footage from NBC4 Washington on Wednesday captured the unidentified man pacing atop the tower.

The standoff ended Friday morning when the man reportedly jumped, resulting in his death after 62 hours on the tower, according to American University’s student newspaper, The Eagle, which cited police calling it an apparent suicide. WAMU issued a statement expressing sorrow, noting the efforts of emergency services.
