Lester Holt Departs NBC Nightly News May 30

Lester Holt, the anchor of NBC Nightly News for a decade, announced he will step down from the role, with his final broadcast set for May 30, 2025.

Holt, who became the first African-American to solo anchor a weekday nightly news program in 2015, will transition to a full-time role at Dateline NBC, where he plans to expand his work on in-depth stories.

In a memo to staff, Holt reflected on his career, noting the honor of anchoring two iconic news programs and his unexpected path from a young radio reporter to a trusted broadcaster.

Tom Llamas, currently anchoring Top Story and a frequent substitute for Holt, will succeed him as anchor and managing editor starting this summer. Llamas, who will be the first Latino to host the weekday edition, praised Holt as “one of the most trusted broadcasters of our time.”

Holt’s departure follows other high-profile anchor exits amid shifts in news consumption habits.
