Streamer Epix Rebrands As MGM+
Premium streamer/pay cable TV network Epix has re-branded to more closely associate with its high-profile studio owner under the name, MGM+.
Mediapost reports the new moniker took effect on January 15, to coincide with the release of the company’s third season of “Godfather of Harlem”. In September 2022 the company -- now owned by Amazon -- said it would be changing the name of Epix for its TV networks and streaming businesses to MGM+.
Amazon closed its deal to buy Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for $8.45 billion in March of last year.
Michael Wright, president of MGM+, has said the brand equity associated with the MGM name is “an incredibly powerful, loud name that means something to people.. It's really something of a gift."
Epix launched as a U.S. pay TV cable network in October 2009. In 2017, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer bought out the financial stakes of co-founders Lionsgate and Paramount in a $1 billion deal.
Epix’s ad-free streaming service -- Epix Now, which started up in 2019 -- is sold to consumers priced at $5.99 a month. The cable network, Epix is also priced at $5.99 a month. Both take on the new name MGM+.
In 2019, Epix had 15 million cable TV subscribers.
