Report: Pay-TV Providers Lost 650K Net Subscribers

According to data from Leichtman Research Group, the largest pay-TV providers in the U.S. lost about 650,000 net video subscribers in Q3 2021. That number includes cable, satellite, and live TV streaming services. Without the gains from live TV streamers, the data shows that cable and satellite lost 1.33 million customers for the quarter, reports Cord Cutters News.

Leichtman says that the top pay-TV providers now have around 77 million customers, with 7.5 million of those coming from live TV streaming services.

Here are the customer losses from cable and other traditional TV providers for the quarter.
  • Comcast -407,000
  • Charter -121,000
  • Cox -70,000
  • Altice -67,500
  • Madiacom -21,000
  • Atlantic Broadband -6,000
  • Cable One -8,000
  • DIRECTV -412,000

“While Pay-TV net losses in the quarter increased from last year’s third quarter, annual net losses were relatively similar to a year ago,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, Inc. “Over the past year, top pay-TV providers had a net loss of about 5,100,000 subscribers, compared to a loss of about 4,820,000 over the prior year.”
