The Rundown: Locations Seeing Surge

➤CONCERN ABOUT LOCALIZED SURGES AS U.S. CORONAVIRUS CASES PASS TWO MILLION: There is concern about surges of the coronavirus in several states, with some viewing it as an emerging second wave, as confirmed cases in the U.S. passed two million, according to Johns Hopkins University's count as of last night. There have been more than 112,900 deaths. Among the states showing worrisome surges: Texas reported 2,504 new cases yesterday, its highest one-day total since the pandemic began; Florida reported 8,553 new cases this week, its most of any seven-day period; and California’s hospitalizations are at their highest since mid-May, and have risen in nine of the past 10 days. Potentially most concerning is Arizona, where its daily new cases shot up in the last two weeks, and the percentage of people tested who are positive is rising. Seeing the warning signs, the state's Department of Health Services has urged Arizona hospitals to activate emergency plans.

➤CALIFORNIA SHERIFF'S DEPUTY SHOT IN 'AMBUSH': A San Luis Obispo County, California, sheriff's deputy was shot in the head early Wednesday at a police station in the city of Paso Robles in what authorities described as an "ambush" by a man who wanted to harm or kill police. The deputy is hospitalized in serious but stable condition. The Sheriff's Office said late last night that they were looking for a 26-year-old transient named Mason James Lira. After shooting the deputy, police believe the gunman killed a 58-year-old transient and was able to evade a manhunt. Authorities said they don't know if the attack was connected to the nationwide outcry against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd's death.

➤HUMAN REMAINS FOUND IN IDAHO IDENTIFIED AS TWO MISSING CHILDREN: The human remains found on the Idaho property of Chad Daybell have been identified as being those of his two stepchildren, seven-year-old Joshua "JJ" Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan, who have been missing since last September, relatives of the children said Wednesday. Daybell married the children's mother, Lori Vallow Daybell, a few weeks after the kids disappeared. Chad Daybell was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of concealing or destroying evidence after the remains were found and bail was set for him at $1 million yesterday. Police have said the Daybells lied to them about where the children were before the couple quietly left the state, and the two were found months later in Hawaii. Lori Daybell is in jail on a $1 million bond after being charged with child abandonment and obstructing the investigation. The couple have also been under scrutiny after the deaths of both of their former spouses.

➤TRUMP: WILL 'NOT EVEN CONSIDER' CHANGING NAMES OF ARMY BASES NAMED FOR CONFEDERATE LEADERS: Two days after Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and Defense Secretary Mark Esper said they were open to considering changing the names of the 10 Army bases that are named for Confederate Army officers, President Trump said yesterday (June 10th) that his administration will, quote, "not even consider" it. Trump tweeted: "These Monumental and very Powerful Bases have become part of a Great American Heritage, a history of Winning, Victory, and Freedom. The United States of America trained and deployed our HEROES on these Hallowed Grounds, and won two World Wars. Therefore, my Administration will not even consider the renaming of these Magnificent and Fabled Military Installations." Amid the nationwide demonstrations in the past two weeks in the wake of George Floyd's death, the Navy and Marine Corps banned public displays of the Confederate Army battle flag on their installations.

➤TRUMP TO START DOING RALLIES AGAIN ON JUNE 19TH IN TULSA: President Trump will return to holding his rallies next week, with his first one on June 19th in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and others planned for Florida, Texas and Arizona. Trump hasn't held a rally since early March because of the coronavirus pandemic. Oklahoma was among the first states to loosen lockdown restrictions, and there have been no state limits on the size of group gatherings since June 1st. Tulsa's mayor said they were working to confirm the details of the rally and its location. AP said Trump campaign officials didn't respond to questions about what safety precautions would be taken for those who attend.

The company's goal is to reopen Disneyland and Disney California Adventure on July 17th and a nearby Disney-themed shopping area a week earlier on July 9th. Advance reservations will be required for the theme parks and capacity will be limited. ➤NASCAR BANS CONFEDERATE FLAG: NASCAR announced yesterday (June 10th) that it is banning the Confederate flag at all of its races and venues, a striking decision as the flag has long been a common sight at the sport's races. It said, "The presence of the Confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry." The move came after Bubba Wallace, NASCAR's only black driver, called for the Confederate flag to be banned. The announcement came ahead of last night's race at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, during which Wallace's car had a #BlackLivesMatter design. While many applauded the decision, there was also some backlash from fans, and Truck Series driver Ray Ciccarelli said on Facebook he would quit the sport. He wrote: "I could care less about the Confederate Flag but there are ppl that do and it doesn’t make them a racist."
