2019 National Edward R. Murrow Award Winners Are...


RTDNA has announced the winners of the 2019 National Murrow Awards. From more than 4,600 entries, these awards recognize 100 local and network radio, television and digital news organizations for 122 examples of outstanding journalism in 16 categories. The winners at the national level also include Student Murrow Awards in five categories of audio, video and digital reporting.

From excellence in technical aspects of multimedia news to innovation, engagement and investigation, these pieces exemplify the best of broadcast and digital journalism today.

“The RTDNA National Edward R. Murrow Awards recognize local and national news stories that uphold our Code of Ethics, demonstrate technical expertise and exemplify the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community,” said Dan Shelley, RTDNA Executive Director. “Winning a Murrow Award means that a news organization has provided exemplary public service to its viewers, listeners and readers.”

In its biggest win since 2016, ABC News has achieved Overall Excellence in the network television category.

WTOP-FM, Washington D.C. repeats its 2018 win for Overall Excellence in large market radio, while Vermont Public Radio clinches the spot for small market radio.

In the Television categories, Overall Excellence awards go to KMGH-TV, Denver, for large market television and KRDO-TV, Colorado Springs, for small market television.

For Overall Excellence among digital news organization entrants, The Seattle Times and The Texas Tribune are 2019’s winners for large and small outlets, respectively. The Texas Tribunealso has four wins in the Breaking News Coverage, Continuing Coverage, Excellence in Social Media and Hard News categories.

Taking home the most national awards this year is CBS News, with an Overall Excellence award in the network radio category, and seven wins across radio for Breaking News Coverage and Newscast, and, in network television, Excellence in Writing, Feature Reporting, Hard News, Investigative Reporting and News Documentary.

"These winning pieces from news organizations large and small have educated, uplifted, inspired, uncovered and enlightened,” added Shelley. "We're proud to recognize the most outstanding ways journalists are keeping the public informed, holding the powerful accountable and enhancing the quality of life in their communities."

The national awards will be presented October 14, 2019, at the RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala at Gotham Hall in New York City.
