National Enquirer Paid $200K for Bezos' Texts
The publisher of the National Enquirer paid $200,000 for intimate texts between Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez, who he was having an affair with, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The Journal said American Media Inc. paid the money to Sanchez's brother, Michael Sanchez.
It had previously been reported that Michael Sanchez, a longtime source for the Enquirer, had provided the texts, which the tabloid published in January.
Bezos and his wife of 25 years, Mackenzie, announced quickly after that they were divorcing. Bezos later went public with claims that American Media threatened to publish explicit photos of him unless he stopped investigating how the Enquirer got his texts and publicly declared that the story wasn't politically motivated.
AMI's CEO, David Pecker, is a longtime friend of President Trump, and Bezos' investigators had suggested the Enquirer's coverage of his affair was driven by politics. Trump has been a vocal critic of Bezos, in part because of coverage of him and his administration by The Washington Post, which Bezos owns, that he doesn't like.
