Atlanta: Radio One Hosts #Strategy For Change Town Hall
In the wake of several days of protests in Atlanta, Rad/TVTV host Rickey Smiley, entertainers and community leaders hosted a town hall meeting called #StrategyForChange.
According to 11alive.com, leaders from metro-area police departments, along with Black Lives Matter activists and entertainers met at the House of Hope Church in Decatur to discuss strategies of how to work together to improve relations between police and communities of color.
The event was hosted by WHTA Hot 107.9 FM and broadcast live to four Radio One stations.
The town hall meeting comes after protesters marched for five straight days through the streets of Atlanta, demanding action from top Atlanta officials.
The night was full of impassioned calls for solutions and real change, but at times, it competed with raw emotions and anger over police killings of unarmed black men across the country.
"This will not be pretty. There is no pretty solution," said rapper and activist David Banner. "Black men, what are you gonna do about it? Every day, they are killing our children, and the question I came here to ask is, 'What are we willing to do? How far are you willing to go?'"
Approaches to solutions were varied. Dr. Bernice King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., called for people to organize, agree on a mission and develop a strategy. Host Rickey Smiley urged all in attendance to direct their anger and frustration at the ballot box.
