Willie Geist |
Sources exclusively confirmed to NY Post-Page Six that the “Today” and “Morning Joe” co-anchor will next month step in as host of a revamped “Sunday Today.”
But the new show — which airs before “Meet the Press” — won’t be just politics.
One high-level executive stated, “The show will start in early April and will still be ‘Sunday Today,’ but will be more thoughtful and reflective in tone, in fitting with the Sunday morning shows. Even though we are in an election year, Willie’s new show won’t be all politics. It is going to cover pop culture and social trends, but it’s built around Willie’s unique voice and take on the issues.”
Geist is expected to continue to appear on “Today” and MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
The move also puts Geist head-to-head with his own father, Bill Geist, who has been a correspondent for “CBS Sunday Morning” since 1987. The source added, “In a way he is following in his father’s footsteps.”
Meanwhile, the current weekend “Today” team including Erica Hill, Sheinelle Jones and Dylan Dreyer will continue to anchor the Saturday show, which will retain its current format.
